Agnes Garthwaite Obituary

Agnes (McAuliffe) Garthwaite, 90
WELLS -- Agnes (McAuliffe) Garthwaite, 90, a resident of Furbish Road, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at Varney Crossing in North Berwick.
Agnes was born on June 18, 1920, in Stamford, Conn., the daughter of Florence and Margaret (Rowan) McAuliffe. Agnes was extremely proud of her Irish heritage - both her parents 'came over on the boat' from Counties Mayo and Cork.
She grew up in Stamford and attended local schools, graduating from Stamford High School in 1937.
In 1948, she married Edward Eaton Garthwaite, first residing in Darien Conn., then moving to Wells in 1965 seeking a better environment to raise three active sons. This decision proved itself to be quite wise, the family found a much better way of life. She was a wonderful loving mother.
Agnes went to work for Garnsey Brothers Real Estate, Wells office, in the mid 60s. Upon receiving her real estate license, she embarked on a successful sales career that spanned three decades. She specialized in the sale and rental of beach and shore properties.
Upon retirement, Agnes and Edward became frequent visitors to estate sales and auctions pursuing their hobby of antique collecting. Agnes was attracted to crystal and pottery in particular.
She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years in January of 2002. Survivors include three sons, Gerald Garthwaite and his wife Anne of Gorham, Kevin Garthwaite and his wife Marguerite of Wells, Peter Garthwaite of Moody; and two grandchildren, Joel Garthwaite and Chelsea Garthwaite, also of Moody.
The Garthwaite family would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff at Varney Crossing for the loving care they provided Agnes.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2011, at 11 a.m., at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Rd., Wells, where a period of visitation will immediately follow until 3 p.m. Private interment will be in Ocean View Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are in care of Bibber Memorial Chapel, 111 Chapel Rd., Wells. www.bibberfuneral.com.
