Leighton, 93
LISBON FALLS -- Ramona D. Leighton, 93, died on May 29, 2011.
She was born on April 27, 1918, the daughter of Miriam and Arthurs Hincks. She graduated from Falmouth High School and attended the University of Maine. She married LaForest Leighton, together they had five children and they were married for 52 years.
She was a member of the Yarmouth Eastern Star, a chartered member of Ingraham Volunteers and sang regularly in area church choirs.
Mona was a strong, independent and energetic person for her entire life. Over the years she was involved in many activities including: singing professionally, The Portland Players and Camp Fire Girls. She also worked with developmentally disabled and was always ready to lend a helping hand. She was an avid reader and a fabulous baker, known especially for her apple pies.
She made her home a welcoming place for everyone. Slumber parties at Grammie Mona's were an institution. She thought nothing of taking eight kids to the beach or the fourth of July fire works. She was loved and revered by all.
She was a treasure and the precious jewel of our family. She will be ever so sadly missed.
Besides her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by her brother, Arthur Hincks and her sister, Doris Hincks. She is survived by her three sons, George Leighton and his wife Johanna, Jeffrey Leighton and his wife Lynne, Nicholas Leighton and Linda Leighton, two daughters, Ramona Tupper and her husband Jon, Lydia Engelbert and her husband John; her sister, Josephine Hayward; 12 grandchildren, Jon and Jason Tupper, Shauna Holliday, Jocelyn, James, and Benjamin Engel Bert, Zachary, Asa, Christian, Matthew, and Jeffrey Leighton, and Wendy Sawtelle; and eight great- grandchildren, Nick, Sebastian and Brody Leighton, Bailey, Jacob and Madison Halliday, and Aiden Brichetto and Hunter Engelbert.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, June 5, 2011, from 3-5 p.m., at the Lindquist Funeral Home, One Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 6, 2011, at the funeral home. Please visit www.lindquistfuneralhome.com for additional information and to sign Mona's guestbook.

Grammie in our weekly pool aerobics!

Grammie spent the summer with us in 2009 and I love her spirit at 91. Each Mon,Wed,Fri she spent one hour doing water aerobics. Along with a day a month with the RedHat Mamma's from Carver, getting books weekly from the library, seeing band concerts,shopping, eating out and much,much more. Look at that figure will ya!!

My sympathy to all Mona's family. She and I grew up at Falmouth Corner so I have known her all my life. There was enough difference in our ages so that we were never close friends but I remember her warm, rich singing voice and her smile and friendly personality.
I'm sure she will be sorely missed.

I love the pictures, bringing back many memories of your Mom. She was a wonderful person and I am glad to have had the opportunity to tell her how important a role she played in my young life. She was the epitome of normal, in spite of what we may have thought at the time ! She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.

I will forever remember Mrs. Leighton for treating me just like any of her own children whenever I was over playing with Jeff, no different, no better, no less, every kid was equal in her warm and kind eyes. Thanks 'Mom' Leighton, I will miss you. Ralph Morgan
