Adelbert 'Del' 'Red' Lawrence Lombard (1911 - 2011)
PELHAM, N.H. -- Adelbert 'Del' 'Red' Lawrence Lombard, formerly of Gorham, died peacefully at 10 p.m. on Sunday, May 15, 2011, at the home of his niece Marcia and her husband Fred Godbyr, in Pelham, N.H.
He was predeceased by his parents, Herbert J. Lombard and Lucina Haynes Lombard; his brothers, Clarence A. Lombard, Earnest P. Lombard, Kermit L. Lombard, Philip A. Lombard, and Theodore L. Lombard, and his sisters, Gladys A. Lombard and Edith L. Lombard. He is survived by several nephews, nieces; great-nephews and nieces; and great-great-nephews and nieces.
Born on Dec. 15, 1911, in Gorham, one of eight children, Del stayed at home until 1936. For the next 40 years he traveled as a groom with the harness racing horses from Maine to Florida, to California, on to Michigan, and then back east to Roosevelt Raceway in New York with many stops in between, many times over the years. He retired from the horse racing world in the spring of 1976.
Upon returning to Gorham in 1977, he went into business with his brother Theodore and started the Lombard Estates subdivision. Del built his own home in the subdivision e and lived there until August of 2010.
Del had a passion for a story telling. Having lived 99 years, he had much history to share and enjoyed sharing it with friends and family - really anyone - who wanted to listen.
Del loved his flowers and enjoyed showing them to everyone. He also loved to feed and watch the birds, as well as all the wildlife around his home.
Del loved his sports and was always ready to enjoy a game, be it alone or with family or a good friend. He watched the Red Sox win their first world series as a young boy and followed them ever since. If it was not baseball then it was basketball or football.
Del will be missed by his family and friends.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2011, at 11 a.m., at Eastern Cemetery, Main Street, Gorham. Arrangements are by the Dolby and Dorr Funeral Chapel, 76 State St., Gorham. Online condolences may be made to www.dolbyfuneralchapels.com.
