Jennie Louise Ramsey Hurd Craib, 87
ALFRED -- Jennie Craib, 87, went to be with her Lord and Savior on April 26, 2011, from the comfort of her Alfred home. While rejoicing that she has been able to join her loved ones who have gone before, she will be sorely missed by those remaining. In the words of her nieces, she was 'a generous, kind, classy woman; despite her pain, she always offered a smile, a hug, and something sweet to eat.'
Jennie was born in Saco on Dec. 21, 1923, the daughter of Frank Edward Ramsey and Sophie Smith Ramsey. She grew up the seventh of eight children in Milton, N.H. She was known as a cheerful, happy child.
She graduated from Nute High School in 1941, where her senior yearbook stated that she had 'The smile that won't come off.' That indeed was true of her throughout her life, despite trials that would come her way.
In 1944 she eloped with her first husband, George 'Bud' Irl Hurd, a man with a keen sense of humor and love of life. He died of sudden heart failure in 1969. She later met William Craib, with whom she also eloped. They had 20 wonderful years together before he died of melanoma in 1994.
She leaves behind two sisters, Sophie Ramsey Hurd and Ruth Ramsey Tanner; many nieces, nephews; and grandnieces and nephews. They have many fond memories of this dear aunt and her moving musical animals.
Family and friends may call on Friday, April 29, from 6-8 p.m., at the Autumn Green Funeral Home, 47 Oak St., in Alfred. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2011, at 11 a.m., at the South Acton Baptist Church, with committal prayers and burial to follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery.
