Amy J. Crone, 84
FREEPORT -- Amy J. Crone, 84, of Freeport, died unexpectedly on Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, at Maine Medical Center much to the sadness of her children, relatives, friends and many others whose lives she touched. She was a 15-year breast cancer survivor.
She was born the youngest of 12 children of Charles S. and Elizabeth Hearn Jackson in Freeport. She grew up in Freeport, attended local schools and graduated valedictorian in her class. She worked as a secretary for local attorney Paul Powers. Later she worked as a stitcher for Freeport Shoe Company, Eastland Shoe Company and L. L. Bean Inc. until her retirement from L.L. Bean in 1988.
During her early retirement years she volunteered at the Mast Landing School lunch program and the recycling center. She made and donated over 100 teddy bears for the Freeport Police Department to give to children in stressful situations such as car accidents and domestic family situations or children that wouldn't be receiving a Christmas present.
She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, embroidery, gardening, reading and various projects which included upholstering a living room furniture set, installing split rail fencing, refinishing wood furniture, installing ceiling molding as well as wallpapering and painting in her home. She was an accomplished seamstress and knitter receiving many compliments on her creations. Her children, nieces, nephews and friends greatly enjoyed Christmas gifts of her handiwork. She was known as 'Aunt Boe' to some of her nieces and nephews.
She said she didn't like cooking, but made delicious apple pies, whoopie pies and baked beans despite the fact that she didn't like baked beans. There was no bribe of any kind that would entice her to eat them. Family, children, friends and pets were a very important part of her life. She enjoyed going to breakfast with her son Lester, church suppers with her nieces Jane Jefferson, Elaine Wyman and her husband Merv, cookouts and dinners with Mark and Cecile Chase, their son Sean and friends.
She liked country music and was a fan of Elvis Presley and Waylon Jennings. Yearly attendance with family and friends to see an Elvis Presley impersonator became a tradition. She liked Dukes of Hazard re-runs for the narrative and music of Waylon Jennings. Before Bill's death in 1999 they traveled to Branson, Mo.
She is survived by her son, Lester Chase of Old Orchard Beach, her daughter, Teri C. Welch and her husband Stephen of Yarmouth; her sister, Irene Allen of Portland; many nieces, nephews; friends, and her cat, Prissy. Her former husbands, Howard 'Bill' Chase and Arnold E. Crone; daughter- in-law, Winnifred Chase; parents; brothers Stewart, Howard, William, Harold, Ralph and Ray, and sisters, Helen Bowen, Doris Peacock, Lena Bodwell and Ruth Waterhouse predeceased her.
At her request there will be no funeral or memorial services. She loved flowers, but always said please give them to me while I am alive not after I'm gone.
In lieu of flowers donations
