Dorothy Mahoney Obituary

Dorothy 'Dot'
Newlander
Mahoney, 91
PORTLAND -- Dorothy Newlander Mahoney, 91, of Portland, passed away surrounded by loved ones at Mercy Hospital on Saturday, April 16, 2011.
She was born in Portland on Jan. 26, 1920, the daughter of Hjalmar and Wilhemina Newlander. She graduated from Deering High School in 1938.
In her early years she worked alongside her husband, George Mahoney, at their two grocery stores in Rosemont and Nasson's Corner. Later she went on to work at Loring, Short and Harmon where she formed many lasting friendships and was affectionately known as 'Olga.'
In 1970 she went to work at The Portland Newspapers as a proofreader and later became the Chief Proofreader. Ever the tireless worker, she reluctantly retired at the youthful age of 75. She made the most of the next 16 years by traveling to various lively locations, spending time with her loving children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as relaxing on her porch with her well-fed calico cat, Mabel.
Besides her parents, Dorothy was predeceased by her sisters, Viola, Edith and Eleanor, as well as her brother, Elmer. She was also predeceased by her two sons-in-law, Frederick Clancy and Gregory Hoyt. She is survived by her two daughters, Judith A. Clancy of Westbrook and Susan E. Hoyt of Gorham; her grandchildren, Michael Clancy of Worcester, Mass., Jonathan Clancy and his wife Jacqueline of Henniker, N.H., Elizabeth Clancy of South Portland, Christopher Hoyt of South Portland and Matthew Hoyt and his wife Sivath of Jacksonville, Fla. Dorothy is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Ryan Clancy of South Portland, and Madeline and Jared Clancy of Henniker, N.H. Dorothy also leaves behind a dear niece and nephew, Julie Davidson and David Smart, both of Portland.
Dorothy's family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to all the nurses, doctors and various professionals who helped care for her during final years.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 13, at St. Ansgar Lutheran Church, 515 Woodford St., Portland, with the Rev. Bill Barter officiating. Jim and I were so sorry to hear of Dot's passing, she was a wonderful lady.
We met Dot when our cat Mabel, decided to leave home and move in with her. We'll always be greatful that she loved Mable so much because Mable had such a difficult beginning. I rescued Mable from an abandon house in Falmouth in June 1992, it had been raining for weeks, she was pregant, cold and had
no food. Three days later she had her kittens, two lived two did not.
She was a good mother but we had four cats to many for Mable so she decided to move to Mrs. Mahoney's who would only have her. We will always be greatful for her kindness to Mable and that makes her top notch in our book.

On this beautiful Easter Day, I am fondly remembering the ever-fiesty Aunt Dot! What a treat it was to have her visit the PPH lunchroom - as an employee or as one of the newly retired!
I'm sure the family will miss her dearly, with special prayers to Judy, Liz, Michelle, Ryan & Julie.
