TAMPA, Fla. -- George Paul Heitz Jr., 72, of Winter Haven, Fla., and formerly of New Hampshire, died on May 7, 2011, at Kindred Hospital in Tampa, Fla. He was the husband of the late Louise C. (DiMatteo) Heitz who died on March 19, 2010.
George was born in Chicago, Ill., on April 20, 1939, the son of the late George P. and Anna M. (Raschka) Heitz. He attended schools in Chicago and graduated from Harrison High School. After graduating he enlisted into the U.S. Air Force and served his country.
He met his future wife, Louise, at a YWCA 7/11 dance were she was volunteering and married her shortly afterwards. Still in the Air Force, the couple traveled to Montana, Chicago and GTMO Bay Cuba before settling in Lee, N.H. They later settled in Winter Haven, Fla.
George worked for the Federal Government as a contract manager at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in New Hampshire for several years before retiring.
George enjoyed creating all types of cards on the computer; he was also a pro at putting together photo albums. He and his wife loved traveling by car across the country.
He is survived by a brother Richard Zilka and his wife Marie of Chicago, and a sister Georgian (Heitz) Kunde of Berwyn, Ill. He also leaves many nieces and nephews; as well as a sister-in-law, Sarah (DiMatteo) Conley of Cape Elizabeth, and a brother-in-law, Daniel DiMatteo of Falmouth. George was predeceased by his sister, Janet Lou Heitz.
A visitation for immediate family will be held on Friday, May 20, 2011, from 6-8 p.m., at Advantage Funeral & Cremation Services, 981 Forest Ave., Portland. A public visitation will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2011, from 10:30-11:30 a.m., at St. Peters Roman Catholic Church, 72 Federal St., Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30 a.m. with the Very Rev. Louis Phillips celebrating. Interment with military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
