Harold Pomelow, 86
WESTBROOK -- Harold Pomelow, 86, of Falmouth Street, passed away on Monday, May 16, 2011, at Coastal Manor in Yarmouth.
He was born in Westbrook on July 11, 1924, the oldest son of Peter and Marion Collins Pomelow. Harold worked for Dana Warp Mills until 1943, entering the military in March. During WW II, he served in the 295th Engineer Combat Battalion, landing on Omaha Beach. He served from March 1943 to December 1945, when he was honorably discharged. He saw action in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal and the European African Middle East Theater Campaign Ribbon. When he returned home in 1945, he returned to work for Dana Warp Mill until he went to work for S.D. Warren.
On March 6, 1948, he married Delores Bannister in Westbrook. Harold retired from S.D. Warren in 1986.
Harold enjoyed fishing and hunting, spending many hours at Sebago Lake fishing for trout or salmon and hunting in the Pickett Mountain area. He also enjoyed bowling. Pool, and horseshoes. One of his greatest pleasures was walking the boardwalk along the Presumpscot River. He regularly kept track of the beavers that lived along the riverbanks. He walked the Presumpscot daily for years, until about a year ago, when he was no longer able to continue.
He was predeceased by his parents; his wife Delores on Oct. 29, 2001; and brothers, Floyd, Phillip and Clyde Pomelow. Harold is survived by his son Steven and wife Sherry Pomelow of Gorham, two daughters, Kathryn and husband John Lomenzo of Charlotte, N.C., Wendy and husband Robert Collins of Cape Elizabeth; six grandchildren, Steven, Tina, William, Abigail, Cameron and Sean; and five great-grandchildren Austin, Tyler, Andrew, Ava and Emily.
