Hazel Burton, 89
SOUTH PORTLAND -- Hazel Burton, 89, of South Portland, passed away at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House on Thursday, May 12, 2011, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Portland on August 31, 1921, the daughter of Arthur and Alice Fielding.
Hazel was educated in South Portland schools, and was a graduate of South Portland high school. She spent most of her life as a devoted homemaker raising three children. Later, Hazel was employed at Cape Shore Paper. She also worked for Carolyn's Catering part time. Hazel enjoyed sewing, cooking, listening to old time music, watching old films, playing cards, and camping with the family at Sebago Lake, and later without the kids in Hiram. She was very active in Elm Street United Methodist Church participating in MAC's Club, Thalia Circle, working on church suppers, and the church Christmas fair.
Hazel met her future husband, Kenneth Burton, while roller skating in Portland. They were later married in South Portland. Hazel and Kenny enjoyed many activities together. One year they took up square dancing and got the whole family involved.
Hazel is predeceased by her husband, Kenneth Burton; and her granddaughter, Laurie Burton. She is survived by her three children, Barbara Pottle and her husband, Malcolm, Bruce Burton and his wife, Carmen, Don Burton and his wife, Sandy; five grandchildren, Debbie Ellis, Dan Wadas, Sarah Burton, Russell Burton, and Christopher Burton; three great grandchildren, Michael, Amanda, and Daigen; two great-great-grandchildren, Kayla and Jacob.
There will be visiting hours from 5 - 8 p.m. on Monday, May 16, 2011 at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road South Portland. A service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at Thornton Height's United Methodist Church 100 Westbrook Street, South Portland. A burial will take place at 1:00 p.m., Friday, May 20, 2011 at Brooklawn Memorial Park.
The family would like to thank the Cape Elizabeth Home, The Gorham House, and The Gosnell Memorial Hospice House for their exceptional care for their mother. Arrangements are by the Hobbs Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Hazel's memory to the Alzeimers Association

I am keeping you all in prayer. Hazel was another of the special Moms that saw us all grow up and will always be remembered by the "kids" in the neighborhood & Elm St.UMC. I am one of the Hamlin "kids"!
