Herbert Stinson Obituary

Herbert 'Spike'
Stinson, 70
SOUTH PORTLAND -- Herbert 'Spike' Stinson, 70, passed away on Tuesday May 17, 2011, surrounded by his loving family at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House after a courageous battle with cancer.
Spike was born on Oct. 15, 1940, in Bangor. He was raised by Archibauld and Ellenor Mishio in Portland, where he attended local schools. In 1957 he enlisted in the National Guard and served his time in Fort Dix, N.J., and Portland. After his time in the service he worked at Uncle Andy's bakery where he met the love of his life, Mildred Richards.
In 1977 he opened Stinson's bakery, which enabled him to spend quality time with his family by attending all his children's sporting events and hosting family cookouts. He held a special place in his heart for Lori & Michael. Spike's greatest joy in life was being a husband and a father, living by the motto 'another day in paradise.'
He was active in the community sponsoring many youth baseball teams in Little League Seven.
A perfect day for Spike would be doing projects with Bob, supporting his son Steve and the South Portland Red Riots football team, or attending one of Joe's rock shows.
After retiring, Spike enjoyed taking care of his grandson Nicholas, weekend yard sales, lounging in the sun, and romantic picnics at Spring Point with his wife.
Spike is survived by his loving bride of 44 years, Millie; three sons and their spouses, Bob and Melanie, Joe and Julie, Steve and Susan; and grandchildren, Chad, Mack, Joshua, Ashley and Nicholas. He is also survived by sisters, Virginia and Elaine, brother Ronald; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would especially like to thank the staffs of Mercy Oncology, Cedars Nursing Care Center, and Gosnell Memorial Hospice House.
A visiting hour will be held from 1-2 p.m., with a memorial service at 2 p.m., on Saturday, May 21, at the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Rd., South Portland. Burial will be at Highland Memorial Cemetery, South Portland.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to Gosnell Memorial Hospice House of Scarborough.
