Leon Legere Obituary

Leon P. Legere, 96
SANFORD -- Leon P. Legere, 96, of Sanford, passed away on Friday, May 27, 2011 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, surrounded by his loved ones.
Born in Sanford on March 24, 1915, he was the eldest son of Prosper and Adelia (Baron) Legere. He attended St. Ignatius School and was a communicant of St. Ignatius Parish and St. Therese of Lisieux Parish.
After a full and varied working career, he retired at age 65 from Tenneford Weaving of Sanford. During his retirement years, he was an avid and successful gardener. His family and friends frequently enjoyed fresh produce from his gardens and he took joy in sharing. He also enjoyed hunting and well into retirement, he continued to fish and shared the abundance that he caught.
Well into his 90's, he remained as active as his health allowed. In recent years, he enjoyed playing card games and attending Bingo with his wife and friends. He maintained a close relationship with his only surviving brother, Emile.
Mr. Legere was very proud of his children and took pleasure in the fact that his daughters always got along well and loved each other. He fondly remembered a surprise party in Florida, to celebrate his 90th birthday. It was attended by each of his children and numerous relatives and friends. He was always happiest when his family would gather to celebrate.
He is predeceased by his first wife Lorrette (Vaillancourt) Legere. They were married for 52 years. Also to predecease him were his brothers, Robert, Armand, Rudolph and Gerard, and his only sister, Lucienne. He is survived by his wife Clothilde 'Connie' (Costello) Legere; and his daughters, Phyllis Vaccaro and her husband William of Lyman, Mary 'Betty' Laskey and her husband Ronald of Vernon, Conn., Claire Guertin-Brackett and her husband Dwight Brackett of Portland, Theresa Charrette of Sanford, and Carmen Pierce and her husband Peter of Oakton, Va.; as well as his step children, Ronald Costello and his wife Judy, Thomas Costello and his wife Sara, and Paula Thibodeau and her husband, Larry. Additionally, he leaves his brother Emile and his wife Lorraine; as well as 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours for Mr. Legere will be on Monday, May 30th from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Lafrance - Lambert & Black Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street in Sanford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 31st at 11:00 a.m., at the St. Therese of Lisieux Parish, Holy Family Church, on North Ave. in Sanford. Burial will follow at St. Ignatius Cemetery.
