Philip Rose Obituary

Philip Rose, 73
STARBOARD -- Philip Rose, 73, of Starboard, died on May 11, 2011, at the Waldo County Hospital following a car accident.
A poet, a captain, a teacher, and beloved family member, Phil lived in a home he built himself on a bluff overlooking Machias Bay. He was a member of the Salt Coast Sages, a Machias-based poetry group, with whom he published a book of poems. Many of Phil's poems reflected his love of the ocean, boating, and the culture of Downeast Maine.
Earlier in his life Phil had taught English at Falmouth High School; later, he worked as the dockmaster at the Portland Yacht Club, taught at the Sunrise Senior College at the University of Maine at Machias, and served on the Machiasport Board of Selectmen. He is survived by sisters, Linda Lund and Marcia Adams; sons, Leigh and Richard Rose; nieces, nephews and a grandson.
The family will hold a memorial event on June 25 at the Roque Bluffs Community Center.

Phil was a great guy. We played Wallyball together and I spent a number of sailing adventures on the coast of New England and to Bermuda. Including delivering Robert Kennedy junior’s sailboat to the compound in Cape Cod. That was interesting.... Even stayed at his house in Mathias Port. He will always be missed.

Dear Marcia and Linda - I remember summer Sundays when we used to gather on the front steps of your home in Yarmouth to make ice cream with your Mom and Dad. Phil was a great friend and I will miss him greatly. Dave Selleck (Topsham, ME)

My deepest sympathies. I worked with Phil for years and knew his lovely family. It sounds like he has been to heaven twice, the first time when he moved Downeast.

I worked as a dockhand when Phil was the Dockmaster at Handy Boat Yard in Falmouth. I have fond memories of conversations with him. My condolences to all of you for the sudden loss of such a good man.

Dear Leigh and Family,

I was an employee of Phil's at Handy Boat Service. Phil was more than an employer to me but a mentor. He taught me everything I know about the water and launch driving. I am so, so sad to hear of his passing and think of him often. My heart goes out to you all! Leigh, I would love to hear from you and know the details of the service arrangements.

I met Phil through friends and family in Yarmouth when he was at PYC. He was well-liked and always had a smile for all. He was gracious and patient and oh, how he loved the sea. I am very sorry for your loss. I know you will miss Phil very much.

Dear Linda and Marcia, I was saddened to hear about Philip. I hope to be able to read his book, as I too have written many many poems and love this medium of communicating. I wanted to tell you that your Dad, Herbert, hired me as a secretary right out of high school. I enjoyed working for him and loved the people at B&M. Those were great days. My sympathy to you, Rosemary (Arsenault) Fetter--Bradenton, Fl

I was a student of Mr. Rose back in the late 60's at Falmouth High School. He would share many war stories during class, more so then teaching English. He was a favorite among the Class of '67. Always in a good mood and willing to listen to our personal problems. He will be missed. I was surprised to hear he published a book of poems. I will look forward to reading it. My condolences to his Family.

Phil and I go back many years. Phil had a passion for playing Wallyball in the Portland area and we delivered many yachts along the East Coast too. A very nice guy.....

Linda and Marcia, so sorry for your loss. I remember Phil from the days when Linda and I hung out together at NYA and when he would come into Vaughans Pharmacy and sit and talk. I pray for peace and comfort for you both.
