Richard Miller Obituary

Richard 'Dick' Howard Miller, 83
TOPSHAM -- Richard 'Dick' Howard Miller, 83, of Topsham, passed away with family at his side on Thursday, April 21, 2011, at Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick.
He was born on Jan. 4, 1928, in Chicago, Ill., to the parents of William Harvey Miller and Beatta Emilia Koppang. Richard and his brother and sister, Robert Edward Miller and the late Dorothy May Tucker, grew up in Chicago.
Richard served in the U.S. Army during WWII. After the Army, he joined the Civil Service and was stationed in Athens, Greece where he met his wife, Edith. They were married two years later in the Vatican. Over the next 27 years, they had the opportunity to raise their four children while living in Washington, D.C., Athens, Greece and the Philippines. After retiring from the civil service, Edith and Dick moved to their beloved Brunswick.
In Maine, Dick was able to pursue his passion of working as a carpenter. He started a remodeling business called Omega Construction. Once there, he enjoyed working on he and Edith's many flower gardens, puttering around their old house and taking daily walks with their rescued Greyhound dog. Dick also enjoyed volunteering his time for worthy causes such as the Friends of Curtis Memorial Library and the Brunswick Village Improvement Association. He enjoyed working and hiking on the Appalachian Trail with his son.
After Edith's death, he moved to the Highlands in Topsham. There, he enjoyed the company of many friends, in particular his very good friend, Effie Blackstone.
He will be missed by those he leaves behind; his daughter, Bea Belrose and husband Steve of Concord, N.H., son, Rich Miller and wife Debi of Eastampton, N.J., son, Nevin Miller and wife Debbie of Harpswell, daughter, Jenn Hanson and husband Charley of Center Harbor, N.H.; his four grandchildren, Jamie, Derrick, Taylor and Ariel; and two great-grandchildren, Marshall and Emily.
His family would like to thank all of the professional staff at Midcoast Hospital for their wonderful kindness and care.
The viewing will be held on Wednesday, April 27, 2011, between 2-3 p.m., with a funeral service immediately following at 3 p.m., at Brackett Funeral Home located at 29 Federal St., Brunswick. The burial will be held on Thursday at 9 a.m. at the Veteran's Cemetery in Augusta.
The family would appreciate that any donations be made to:
