Sara Brewster Obituary

Sara Scarboro
Brewster, 72
CRESTVIEW, Fla. -- Sara Scarboro Brewster, 72, of Crestview, Fla., and formerly of Scarborough, died peacefully at the home of her daughter, Bonney L. Wheelden, on April 18, 2011, of cancer.
Sara was born on July 27, 1938, in Millen, Ga., the daughter of George and Irene Parker Scarboro. She grew up with three brothers and two sisters in Savannah, Ga. When she was only 16 years old she met a young serviceman from Maine, the late Charles R. Brewster, who was to be her husband for 36 years. They were married in Georgia on Sept. 4, 1954, and soon moved to Maine where they raised their three children. Shortly after moving to Maine, she met her beloved, lifelong best friend, Gloria Hatch Brewster of South Portland.
Although not formally educated, Sara was a very intelligent, well-spoken and well-read woman. She instilled a love of books and reading in her children from a very young age. She enjoyed knitting, reading, traveling with friends (especially April Brewster) and was a great cook. Her children always looked forward to coming home from school to something delicious such as spaghetti and meatballs, beef stew and some type of baked goodies.
In recent years she had taken an avid interest in politics and enjoyed keeping up on current events. She could be feisty and told it like it was. She wasn't afraid to share her opinion if asked. 'Nan' as her grandchildren called her, was continuously self-taught, striving to keep up with modern times even into her early 70s. For example, granddaughter Michelle once found a 'Shakira' CD at her condo. She also decided to learn Spanish and kept up with modern technology, mastering the use of computers, email, cell phones (texting) and even had Facebook account.
Sara enjoyed the companionship of two dogs, the late 'Barney' and more recently 'Yogi' who is now in the care of her brother, Tommy Scarboro.
Sara was a homemaker for several years. However, once her children were older, she began working at various high-end retailers such as Jordan Marsh, Macy's and Filenes.
In January of 2010 she purchased a new home and moved to Crestview, Fla., to live near her daughter Bonney and her family and to escape the long, cold Maine winters. As her illness progressed, she moved, she moved in with Bonney, her husband Steven and daughter Charlie who took attentive and loving care of her during her final days.
Sara was predeceased by her husband, Charles, in 1990; and her daughter-in-law, Julie Hershey Brewster, in 1997. She is survived by her children, Beverly Cote and her husband Ghislain of Saco and Carlisle, Pa., Bonney Wheelden and her husband Steven of Cresteview, Fla., and Barry Brewster of Buxton. She is also survived by her much-loved grandchildren, Michelle S. Cote Gallitto, Eric R. Cote, Alexandra F. Back and Charlotte B. Back. Also surviving are a sister Sandra Beckman and her husband Roger, her brother Tommy Scarboro; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at the Thornton Heights Methodist Church in South Portland on Friday, May 6, at 10 a.m. Interment will be at the Black Point Church Cemetery in Scarborough.
