Stewart Townsend Obituary

Stewart S.
Townsend, 87
HOLLIS -- Stewart S. Townsend, of Hollis, passed peacefully at the age of 87 on Monday, June 13, 2011, at Maine Medical after a brief illness. He is survived by his only son, Stewart A. Townsend and his wife of Portland; by his love of 40 plus years, Ramona Mahar; her children, Bernard Mahar, Neva Kitts, Rhonda Desrochers, and Shannon Murphy; their spouses; their children; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews throughout the Townsend family.
Stewart was born in Calais on July 27, 1923, to Eugine and William Townsend. Stewart left Calais at the age of 17 and moved to Portland to work at the shipyards. Although not able to enlist in the service during the war, he did his part by building ships. In later years he was a lobsterman off Chebeague Island and retired from C.H. Robinson Paper Company in Portland after 30 years of employment.
Stewart loved to sing and belonged to a Barbershop quartet for a number of years. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, golfing or just walking in the woods. He was an avid sports fan and could always be counted on for the score of any game.
Known and loved for his remarkable personality, always ready with a smile, hug and a kiss, as well as a kind word, not only for family but for strangers. You only needed to meet Stewart once to become one of his admirers.
Stewart will be missed immensely by his family and all who knew and loved him.
At his request, there will be no viewing or funeral service.

We feel a very deep loss here at Ronald Rovner's MD. office. Mr. Townsend was a very kind and sweet man. I had the pleasure of knowing him for 14 years and he always made me smile. Our condolences to his love Ramona and to his family.
