Muriel Twomey

Muriel Descoteaux Twomey of Gladwyne, PA, passed away peacefully on November 1st, 2012 in Ossining, N.Y, after a long illness. She was 89. She was predeceased by her husband, Harry F. Twomey, Jr., in 1991. She is survived by her children, Anne and John, daughter-in-law Maria S. Chan, son-in-law John Bedford Lloyd, and her two adored grandchildren, Hannah and Elizabeth Lloyd, all of Westchester County, NY. A native of Saco, Maine, Muriel was a graduate of Thornton Academy in Saco and attended Portland Business School. She lived in Boston and Needham, MA for 10 years after her marriage. The family then lived for 9 years in Brookfield, WI, where she founded a Girl Scout Troop, and was President of the Red Cross Volunteers at Cottage-Swanson School there. The family moved to Gladwyne, PA in 1966. An avid reader, she became a library volunteer at the Gladwyne Public Library for 5 years. She attended Chinese cooking school, beginning in 1966 under the supervision of Chinatown's "Mayor" Mr. Lee, of Race Street, finishing in 1969. She was a member of the Main Line Newcomer's Club from 1966 until 1985. In 1974 she became a partner with Peggy Roach at Merion Square Antiques for 15 years, in Ardmore, Pa. She enjoyed the conviviality and travel of The Questers, an antique collector's organization, and also became quite a bowler until 2000. She loved visiting any horse track and placing wagers with a beer and a hot dog in one hand, and her tickets in the other. She traveled to Mexico, Ireland, France, Monaco, and England. She enjoyed playing poker each week at both the Ardmore and Wayne Senior Centers, where she enjoyed the camaraderie. Muriel made many close friends wherever she lived. She was one of a kind. Always a beach person, she could never get enough of the ocean, in either New Jersey, or her beloved Old Orchard Beach, Maine. She was predeceased by her two sisters, Jacqueline Northway of Old Orchard Beach, Maine; Jean Thompson of Kennebunk, Maine; and her brother Phillip Descoteaux, of Lowell, Massachusetts. There will be a private interment at Valley Forge National Historical Park Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to Saint John's Hospice, 1221 Race St., Philadelphia, PA 19107-1694.
