Daniel Mungall Obituary

Daniel Mungall Jr. passed away March 18th at the age of 97. Well into his 90's, he continued to sing with the Orpheus Club of Philadelphia, ski with his grandchildren, draft legal memoranda, and play golf, always hoping to shoot his age. Dan was born in Brooklyn, New York, on January 26, 1916. He spent his youth in Nutley, New Jersey in an area called The Enclosure, a cul-de-sac where artists' studios and music rooms were built into the houses. From an early age, his family and the surrounding community of closely-knit neighbors gathered to sing, play the piano, and make music. Dan graduated from Yale College with a degree in Economics in 1937 and then earned his law degree at Harvard Law School, taking a class with the then famous Edward "Bull" Warren. He was hired at Stradley Ronon Stevens & Young, LLP in 1940 as a young man working along side the firm's original lawyers. When the nation went to war, Dan volunteered. Despite being 6'7", the Navy informed him he was 6'2" and that he was needed as the gunnery officer on the Liberty Ship S.S. Elihu Yale. So began his service as a Lieutenant (junior grade) on several liberty ships during WWII. After the war, Dan became the 10th partner at Stradley. He was a member of the International Association of Defense Council and chaired the Fidelity & Surety Committee of the American Bar Association from 1982 to 1983. He served as Associate Reporter for the Restatement of the Law (Third) Suretyship and Guaranty, published by the American Law Institute. For over fifty years he represented Sureties and retired from the firm in 1986. Dan joined the Orpheus Club in 1942 and was president from 1974 to 1976. He missed only two concerts during his sixty eight years as a singing member and in the club's history his membership was the longest. This group of singers and his love of music sustained him with friendships and songs throughout his life. He sang in five quartets, all of which he helped to create. In 1944, he married Jean B. Mungall (Bryn Mawr '44), died 1955. In 1956, he married Edith D. S. Mungall. During their 54 years of marriage, they lived in Radnor, PA and were involved in many Philadelphia area organizations including Sunnybrook Golf Club, Aronimink Golf Club (president from 1954-1955) and the Merion Cricket Club. Dan was past chairman of The Radnor Township Civic Association and president of The United Cerebral Palsy Association of Delaware County. Dan is survived by his children and their families: Daughter Barbara J. Mungall - her husband Jan Pethick, grandchildren Marian Smith and Winslow Smith and their father Frank Smith; Daughter Nancy M. McDowell - her husband Peter, grandchildren Tyler and Julia; Daughter Joanne D. Mungall and grandson Cameron; Son Stephen B. Mungall - his wife Linda, grandchildren Megan, Brooke and Hope; his sister Alice M. Porter and cousin Helen F. Pendergrast. Daniel was a gentle, intelligent and honest man who will be surely missed. A service will be held March 30th, 3PM, Main Line Unitarian Church, Devon, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to: The Settlement Music School, P.O. Box 63966, Philadelphia, PA 19147

Dan was such a special man, so talented, so unassuming, so modest. My father, Medford Brown, preceded him by a few years at Stradley and Co. My dad left Stradley to run a small company and one of the regrets my father always had was not staying at Stradley and continuing to practice law with Dan. Dan's contributions to Orpheus were endless, and I will never forget the time I had working with Dan to reorganize the OC library one hot summer in the early '80's.

To all Dan's children,
What a wonderful life, long, fun and productive it seems to me. I have many fond memories of both your parents in Phila. and in LC. With much sympathy, Liz (Russell)
