John Crum Obituary

John Glenn Crum

MANSFIELD: John Glenn Crum, 69, of Mansfield passed away peacefully at his home Saturday, September 12, 2015.

John was born December 27, 1945 in Shelby, Ohio to the late John Skiles Crum and Naomi Lybarger Crum.

John was a 1963 Shelby High School graduate and a 1967 graduate of Heidelberg College. He earned his M.A. in Humanities from California State University at Dominguez Hills in 1986. John proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1967-1969.

John led a remarkable and meaningful life even though he was a quadriplegic for 42 years. He impacted thousands of lives during his 20 plus years with the Centerburg Local School District. Through John's blog @taipeisignalarmy.blogspot.com he enjoyed the new friends and the opportunity to express his thoughts of his military experience.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Riley Crum of Mansfield; son John Casey Crum of Powell; and brother David (Diane) Crum of Wooster.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother, Tim Crum.

The Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home is honored to serve the Crum family. Per John's wishes, there will be no calling hours or services.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shelby Helpline or the Mansfield Richland County Dog Shelter and Adoption Center.

I would just like to say that John (Mr. Crum to me) was someone who cared about people. I vividly remember him pulling me aside at the end of my senior year. He was a good man. Best wishes to Linda and Casey. You are missed.

I spoke with John on the phone often. Our conversations were mostly about his Blog and our time in Taiwan back in the 1960s. Out conversations were washed in laughter and heart warming remembrances of our Taiwan memories. When ever I passed the corner of Chung Shan North Road and Minquan West Road in Taipei, John's favorite corner downtown. I pass that corner often, and it will always bring John to my memory. I will miss John!

My sincere condolences to all the family. I knew the family through my mother Wilma who worked for Bud at the Mutual, and in highschool. You are all wonderfully good people and wish I could have known you better. God bless you all.

SGT John Crum was a very great man and a man who endured a lifetime of suffering from his fall, then left paralyzed. I often exchanged emails and assisted him with his blog. Back in 2010, I helped find his old place of work (still exists today) and took photos of his old apartment (still exists today) on Daheng Road with a "then and now" photo line up. I want to commend him and his family for their service to our nation and may the memories of John stay firm in our hearts. "To us and those like us"

John and I often corresponded over the years and though we never met face to face, I counted him among my close friends. He was a great and courageous man and I am deeply saddened by his passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
