Arlene Freitas Obituary

Arlene Marie Freitas Feb. 27, 1932 - July 2, 2014 On the afternoon of July 2, 2014 Arlene Freitas passed peacefully surrounded by loving family members after a long battle with kidney disease at the age of 82. Born in Sauk Centre Minnesota to Edward and Grace Miller in 1932, Arlene attended nursing school at St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud Minnesota and graduated in 1952. In 1953 she moved to Long Beach, California, and moved to Marin County in 1955. She worked as a private duty nurse, then for Kaiser Permanente, in the alcohol unit for the County of Marin, and finally for 27 years for Rafael Convalescent Hospital until her retirement in 2006. After retirement she worked as a lay minister for St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Novato, taking communion to the elderly, sick and shut-ins of the parish. In 2011 she moved to Nazareth House, a Catholic senior care facility in San Rafael, where she had volunteered for many years. Arlene enjoyed cooking and gardening, and watching the deer, hummingbirds and butterflies that frequented her Novato neighborhood. She is survived by her sons Raul and Mani Freitas, and her daughters Lori Piombo, Nanci Freitas, Barbara Capers, and Elizabeth Freitas. She is also survived by her sister MaryAnn McGill, and brothers Don and James Miller. She also leaves behind grandchildren Robin, Anthony, Eva, Joshua, Mario, Vincent, Brandon and Grayson. The family wishes to thank the staff of Nazareth House and Northgate DaVita Dialysis Center for their generous care and support. A rosary will be held at 6:30 PM on Tuesday July 8th at Keaton's Mortuary at 1022 E St., San Rafael. A funeral mass will be held at the Nazareth House chapel on Wednesday, July 9th at 10:30 AM at 245 Nova Albion Way in San Rafael.

When I was young, I spent many of days with the Freitas, Arlene, and Al, were very gracious and very accepting for those times. I would visit Esther, who cared for the children and household, and she was well taken care off. I eventually married Esther, and we both always appreciated all they did. I worked with Arlene, art Marin General, as a psych tech, and learn much from her, she was wonderful, and very good with the patients. I'm now a retiring General Surgeon, and know that her teachings has helped me throughout my career. She will be remembered and miss. F. Louis Rios MD

Memories that we have of a loved one are very useful as therapy when we lose someone we love. I also as tracy said remember the California cousins coming to Minnesota. Thanks Aunt Arlene

We loved when the California cousins came to Minnesota! I remember all the good food and great stories. Aunt Arlene had a way of making us feel special. So sorry for your loss. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. Keep her spirit alive by sharing the stories and fun times!

I remember sneaking cigarettes out of Mrs. Freitas' pack when she wasn't looking. Lori was that you with me? I remember overnights in the court yard, I remember rides to school ... both grammar school and high school... she drove us every morning! (Until Raul got his license) I remember the Siamese cats. I remember fun summers in her backyard. I remember the phone in the garage (I thought that was so cool- who has a phone in their garage?) Mostly I remember Mrs. Freitas being so nice and I always felt comfortable at the Freitas house because she made it that way!

Arlene, you will always be Mrs. Freitas to me, my mom next door. My best childhood memories are growing with you and your family, Mrs. Paul's fish sticks, chocolate chip cookies, cranking the ice cream machine (seemed to take all day to make it), huge hairy huskies....and the best pool parties ever!
