JULIAN FOX Obituary

Julian Fox Decorated War Hero, Writer, Artist, Poet, Actor, Teacher Julian Fox, also known as Myron Gibbs, of Fairfax, CA, died December 21, 2010, in San Francisco, CA due to complications related to liver failure. Mr. Fox was born on December 30, 1949 to Hiram Gibbs, Sr., and Jacqueline Collins Gibbs in Pawnee, Oklahoma. He served in the U.S. Army with Company A, 3rd Battalion, 173rd Airborne, 503D Infantry from 1967 to 1970. He fought in Viet Nam, was awarded a Purple Heart, and, in 1968, was awarded a Bronze Star with a V for valor, for heroism. Mr. Fox later became an original member of the Red Earth Performing Arts group, which performed theatrical interpretations of Pacific Northwest Coast tribal stories in the 1970s. He later served in both the Marine Reserves and the Army Reserves and became an outspoken activist for American Indian rights. Mr. Fox lived all over the US but eventually made his home in Marin County, California and was especially fond of Bolinas, where he taught Montessori classes for a time. Children adored him and he found great joy running into his former students as they grew up. Mr. Fox was well known throughout central Marin and seldom went anywhere in the County without being hailed by friends and acquaintances whose lives he had touched. Mr. Fox was a member of the Meskwaki Tribe of Tama, IA and was also part Ponca and Cherokee. He is survived by two sons, Ira John Gibbs of Rockville, MD and Doran Julian Fox of Cassel, Germany; a brother, Hiram Gibbs, Jr.; and five sisters, Barbara Wilson, Blevins Daylight, Alma Focht, Gladys Focht, and Leta Mae Gibbs. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, friends and extended family who loved him. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, December 28 at 7:00 PM at the Mt. Tamalpais Cemetery and Mortuary Chapel at 2500 Fifth Ave. in San Rafael, CA. Interment will be Wednesday morning at about 10:00 AM at the historic cemetery on Horseshoe Hill Road in Bolinas, CA.

I remember Julian when he lived here in the Seattle area. He was a very creative person with many interests whom I enjoyed talking with on many occasions. I was his brother's girlfriend (Hiram) for a number of years at the time. I was so sad to read this obit and will say prayers for his journey in the next world.

To my Uncle,
Thank you for your patience and love. Thank you for helping me to not only walk the path but open the gate so that I could walk it. I regret that I did not spend as much time with you as I would have liked to in your final days. I will miss you but at least I can visit you at least once a year in the spirit world. Thank you for blessing me and all of the other relatives by sitting with us on the drum for the last couple of years it was always an honor. Thank you for giving such a large part of yourself in Viet Nam. Love you Julian
