Charles Mastin Obituary

Charles David Mastin Beloved father and husband Charles David Mastin died peacefully on June 11 of Alzheimer's disease. Born September 12, 1923 in Seward Nebraska, "C.D." was a clarinetist, Eagle Scout; high school runner, basketball forward, and academic devotee in his youth. As Army medic in Normandy he helped save lives during some of WWII's bloodiest battles, until injured by shrapnel near Saint-L“, France. In 1946-47 C.D. lived in New York City, and there married University of Nebraska classmate Adelaide Garver. He then attended the College of William & Mary, Stanford University (B.A. 1948; M.A. 1951), and U.C. Berkeley (Bachelor of Library Science, 1953). C.D. and Addie settled in 1958 in San Anselmo, California, where they raised sons Keith (born 1954) and Larry (1956), and C.D. worked as librarian at the College of Marin until retiring in 1983. In 2007 they moved to Vancouver, WA to be near Larry. Wartime experience motivated C.D. to support peace throughout his life. Concern for the underprivileged motivated him to work for social justice. C.D. attended Unitarian-Universalist churches in Marin and in Vancouver. A man of highest ethical standards who treated every person with dignity, he left the world a better place for those he touched. Survivors include Larry and Addie of Vancouver, WA; and Keith, of Minneapolis, MN. In lieu of flowers or gifts, please send donations in C.D.'s name to Doctors without Borders (www.doctorswithoutborders.org/) or Mercy Corps (www.mercycorps.org/). A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Marin, 240 Channing Way, San Rafael, on October 27 at 1:00 PM.

Every time I of think of Uncle CD, I recall this incredibly kind gentle man, who knew SO much about about a vast variety of topics. I was always so impressed with his knowledge. But what stands out most for me was the kindness and love he showed family and friends. He will be missed!!

Uncle CD was such a kind man and such a sweet and gentle soul. I remember my visit to San Francisco when I was 18. I stayed with him and my Aunt Addie for a week. I was so touched with how much he cared for my Aunt. At the dinner table he told her how beautiful she was. He helped her with chores. I will alway be grateful to him to help us get to know his family. When we were young, he would bring his family all the way from California to Wisconsin every other year for the Garver reunion. I feel very close to my cousins, Larry and Keith because of this. Thank you Uncle C.D. We will all miss you.

My uncle CD was a very elegant person with a keen moral compass. His sharp wit and sense of humor came through the word games we played. The world is a better place because of his efforts.
