Emil John Leum

My name is John Leum. Jack was my favorite painting teacher, while I was one of his many lucky students. The lessons he taught me, not only about painting techniques, seeing visions of what my paintings and drawings will become, but lessons about life. One of my most memorable and cherished memories, was our overnight painting classes in the desert. His love for the desert landscapes, sky, cloud shapes, plant forms, and his talking about his own Native American Ancestral Roots, were such an inspiration to all of us. It is my opinion, that, that was the final year of that special school at Chouinard, they released the majority of the older, veteran, quality staff instructors, and started the new campus in Valencia. I guess only an artist could appreciate the utter chaos of LA.
For my one life, I became an Art Therapist, then, with Jack's influence, went back and finished my BA in Arts Education. I retired teaching K-12, in 2010. My teaching times were interrupted, due to my military tours, served 5 combat tours, last 3, Baghdad, after 9/11. I served as combat convoy gunner, 1990-91, 2004-2005, WEAPONS OF MASS DISTRUCTION CAPTURE TEAMS, 2005-2006, training the New Iraqi Army, back to gunning convoys. I made it home in 2006, losing soldiers, commander and too many friends. I received Psychological, and Physical Combat Injuries, that forced my education early retirement, along with my military retirement. I am now living with my wife, also retired teacher in SC. I can't tell you how important Jack's Loving influence was to my life. I am so sorry for your loss, love,
John

I was looking up an artist by the name of Jack King, and thought I'd look up my favorite teacher from Chouinard, Jack Kling while I was at it. I am sincerely sorry for your loss. Mr. Kling really changed my way of thinking about drawing, and was one of the highlights of my time in school. I've never forgotten him, and have told my kids about his ideas. I'm sorry I didn't get to tell him how much he meant to me. The newspaper description "passion for life, joy of living"....exactly fit with my memories of him, and showed through in his drawing as well.-Robert Rodriguez
