Dear Rita, Charley, Caterina and Siena:
There are no words to express our sorrow in the loss of our beloved Lucas John Hayes. He is our seventh grandchild much loved by all. We will always remember his giggles, many hugs, crawling up our legs and beautiful smile. Now there is an angel in heaven with that special smile. We have prayed to him many times. I'm so sorry for your loss, Charley and Rita as well as your families. We had our second son right around this time last year. Therefore I had no idea. Having gone through the painful grieving and mourning process of my own little brother three years ago, I can only imagine what the passing of your own child must feel like. My heart aches for you all. Never having had the pleasure of meeting Lucas, he looked like a very happy baby. I wish I had the chance to meet him in person. Take care of each other, all of you.

To see him was to know him and to know him was to love him. There are those special people, young or old, who seem to have a deeper connection with those fortunate enough to have contact with them. You look into their eyes and you know the lights are on and that they are engaged in a very deep way. You could see that in Lucas and know that he had and would continue to have a profound impact on all who knew him.
We mourn the loss for family and also mourn the loss for all of whom he had not yet touched. We mourn the loss of the potential to take that smile and positive attitude and tackle the world’s largest issues, one step, one block, at a time. All that he was, and all that he continues to be was born from two of the most spectacular people in the world, our very dear friends, Rita and Charley.

Lucas is the one baby that I will admit was cuter than me....His smile was so bright and made me feel better on even my worst days. I could sit there and listen to his laugh all day and never get tired of hearing it. His dinosaur noises made me literally laugh out loud and the way he crawled backwards made me giggle. On Wednesday, September 29, the second grade celebrated the Feast of Archangels in honor of your angel, Lucas. In his honor, we planted a special plant in the St. Hilary garden just for him. It is called an "angel flower" plant-- which we will feed, water, and take care of very carefully . It will remind us of God's goodness and love, of Lucas, and of his beautiful life .
