Marjorie Julia Conly Westergaard

Colonel Marjorie Julia Conly Westergaard Born August 26th, 1919 in Sioux City, Iowa, she attended schools in Sioux City graduating from high school in 1937. She attended Nursing School at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital graduating in 1940 and then attended Anesthesia School in Detroit, MI. Marjorie spent time in Hawaii with the Red Cross and then had a tour of duty in the Army Nursing Corp. for 30 years. Several years were spent in various parts of the United States also with duty in Europe twice, Japan and Vietnam. Marjorie graduated from the University of Denver after completion of a BS in Nursing Education. Most of her duty was to teach anesthesia to Army nurses. While at San Francisco General Hospital, Marjorie was awarded the Bovard Award as Outstanding Nurse of the Year. Marjorie went through the ranks retiring as Colonel in May, 1974. She received several awards including the Meritorious Medal, Commendation Medal, Legion of Merit and Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster. In 1975, Marjorie married Commander Clarence Westergaard of the Navy, retired. Marjorie is survived by her sister Nellie J. Hammerstrom of Okaboji, Iowa, brother William J. Conly of Chandler, AZ and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews; three daughters Jane Westergaard-Nimocks, and Chris and Nancy Westergaard, and two stepgrandsons. She was predeceased by her husband Clarence Westergaard, her parents Mr. and Mrs. Harry M. Conly, and sisters Wilma Gustafson and Lois Mangan. Marjorie was a member of the Holy Innocents Episcopal Church in Corte Madera, a member of the Retired Nurse Corps. Association, the local Retired Officers' Association for Marin County and the National Assoc. in Washington, D.C. A 10:00 a.m. Graveside Service will be held on Tuesday, November 28th, 2006 at Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, CA, followed by a 12:00 Noon Memorial Service at Holy Innocents Episcopal Church.
