NANCY HAYDEN Obituary

Nancy King Hayden Born on or around February 14th 1931, Nancy King Hayden was born in either Augua Prieta, Mexico or Douglas Arizona. She was raised in San Francisco's Lakeside district by her Mother Anne Marie who worked as a lifeguard at Fleishhacker Pool, the largest swimming pool in the world. Anne Marie later married Victor Burg who became Nancy's loving step father. Nancy attended Lincoln High, graduating in 1947. In the fifties Nancy worked at KCBS radio in San Francisco producing amongst other things a cooking show with the famous chef Caesar Cardini, creator of the Caesar salad. It was there she met and later married her partner for life, Edward Buckley Hayden (Ed). After marrying and having two children; Edward (Ted) and Victoria (Vic), the family moved to Marin County. When Nancy felt her children were old enough, she returned to her career, initially as public relations liaison for the local chapters of the Red Cross and March of Dimes and as a freelance writer. In the 70's Nancy was appointed to be Chairman of the Marin County American Revolution Bicentennial Commission. Two bronze plaques commemorating the commission were created, one placed near the fountain at the Marin Civic Center Lagoon, the other hung at the 1976 dedication of the Golden Gate Ferry Terminal in Larkspur Landing. The commission developed a scholarship program which assisted a generation of local students going to college. A prolific artist, she worked in pencil, charcoal and clay and found objects. Instructed by local artist, Boris Illyin, she finally settled on watercolors. In her later years she utilized her acquired skills in the role of tour guide, sharing her local knowledge with visitors as they toured San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma and Napa Counties. Nancy is predeceased by her husband Ed and daughter, Vic and survived by her son Ted and grandson Edward III (Teddy). A service will be held at the family plot at Cypress Lawn in Colma sometime in the Spring. Inquiries can be made at the family residence.
