NICOLE EVATZ Obituary

Nicole Willat Evatz Lifetime resident of Mill Valley, Nicole succumbed to cancer after a 10-year fight early Friday morning, November 12, 2010, while holding the hand of her beloved husband of 31 years, Richard. She was fifth-generation Marin County, descending from the McCurdys, who settled in Bolinas in the 1800's. At the Tamalpais Mountain Theater she married Richard Evatz who said in 1979, "I found you so irresistible in your beauty of presence and your grand curiosity." Nicole was the sister you called for help, she came without question. She loved and cared and listened without judgment. "She is the part of me I love the most" said her youngest sister. Nicole was a beloved friend. "Nicki had an amazing magnetic quality that brought together a wonderful group of friends." During her teens Nicole started working at the San Francisco family business, the Willat Company. Her grandfather, the founder, invented 'the cold permanent wave'. In her twenties, along with her two younger sisters, she ran a horse business. She also competed in dressage, jumping and cross-country. Nicole was the president of the Southern Marin Horseman's Association in Mill Valley for two years. Nicole held a real estate license for more than 20 years, and most recently worked for Restaurant Realty in Corte Madera until her illness stopped her. Nicole was passionate about life and most particularly tennis. She played competitively for the Scott Valley Tennis Club in Mill Valley. Whether they won or lost, she and her doubles partner, would meet afterward over a mocha to analyze their strategy and mental prowess. She is survived by her husband, Richard Evatz; her daughters Lauren and Leslie Evatz; her grandson Kristopher Shryock; her parents Edith and Leon Willat; her sisters Carol-Lee Fisher, Lydia Wulfe and Tamara Willat; and her many nieces and nephews who came from all over the country to tell her "I love you". Friends are invited to join the family for a Celebration of Nicki's Life on Sunday November 28th from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Outdoor Art Club in Mill Valley. Family suggests memorial donations to one of the following: Marin County Free Library, UCSF Foundation Colon Cancer and Second Chance Rescue.

I received the news today from Gwen (Stocking) Perin, Tam 1966. Want to send our sympathy and best wishes to Nicki's family. We were good friends in high school, and we were always happy to see her over the years. We have our 45th class reunion next year, in September or October, and will be sure to include her in our prayers when we celebrate the lives of those we have lost. Love to all, Rhonda (Smith) McCormick, Tam Class of 1966.

We knew Nicki through Richard and through tennis league play. She was a great hostess at the annual May parties, tennis player, and valiant cancer survivor for many years. Our sympathy to Richard, Leslie, Lauren, and Kristopher.

Nicki supported our bike riding group SUMO. She'd host yearly parties with Richard for SUMO and always showed up at our yearly ride over Tam to Pt. Reyes Station to party with us. Nicki was fun and never too busy to meet new people. She made everyone feel welcome. Thanks Nicki.

I knew Mrs. Evatz through her daughter, Leslie. She would come to Leslie's adult-league soccer games and cheer her daughter (and everyone else) with wondeful and infectious enthusiasm! My thoughts and prayers go out to the Evatz family.

My most sincere sympathy to Richard,Lauren,Leslie, Kristopher. I had the pleasure of talking to Nicole many times at the Canyon's 10 years dinners, she was a bright, kind, fine lady with love in heart for all.
You are in my thoughts and prayers.

I have so many fond memories of Nicki during swim team when our daughters were younger and the tennis team. Her constant positive attitude was inspiring. My thoughts and prayers are with the Evatz family at this difficult time.

My husband, Tim was Richard Evatz room mate during Richard and Nicole's courtship. She said she fell in love with Richard because of his Papa San Chair (belonged to Tim), large wine glasses (belonged to Tim) and Oyster's Rockefeller (cooked by Tim for the proposal dinner). Quite a way to start our friendship. We were drawn together as the 2 'outsiders' at 'Manor' parties and had to find our own things to talk about. One thing that I will always remember is a wilderness camping trip to the Trinity Alps where Nicki could not get over the amount of food and tp Tim brought. Her laugh was big and genuine over that one. And the time she and I won 2 straight games of spades at Moonshine by taking all 13 tricks. Her eyes sparkled as the number of tricks climbed.
