Phyllis Marcus Obituary

Phyllis Marcus Passed away on December 22, 2013 at age 87. A native-born San Franciscan and graduate of George Washington High, she lived in Marin County for over 60 years. Her last eight years were spent at Heritage Pointe in Mission Viejo, CA near her eldest son. Phyllis is survived by her three sons and their spouses: Dr. Bruce and Carol Marcus, Bradley (Avinoam) and Dina Marcus, and Robert (Uriel) and Adi Marcus; and many grandchildren and great-grand children. Phyllis was very close to her three sisters and their families: the Rosenbergs, the Remaks, and the Oppenheimers. Adele Oppenheimer is her last living sibling. Phyllis' life had its hardships and triumphs. She developed a brain illness, hydrocephalus, that began in her 30's, progressed undetected, and eventually left her unable to walk or talk. At age 52, her hydrocephalus was correctly diagnosed and surgically resolved. After months of rehabilitation, the basic skills she had lost were restored. She emerged a new woman, filled with gratitude and hope for a new life which she rebuilt one day at a time. She became an entertainer and created Filly Folly the Clown and glamorous Flame Folly. She appeared on TV, in movies, and on stage. She was featured on Hour Magazine and sang a parody she wrote of "Thanks for the Memory" to Bob Hope for his 80th birthday. Phyllis donated countless hours entertaining seniors throughout the Bay Area, receiving many awards from Bread and Roses, as well as presidential recognition for her volunteer work. Phyllis will be lovingly remembered. Memorial on February 8 at 11:00am. For info. respond to: [email protected]

As a friend of Adele's, I met you at several parties some years back. You often sang and entertained us. I know you will be missed by the many who knew and loved you.

Oh, Auntie Phyllis, I'll miss you! So full of life, so full of love, ever so curious and forever young. You lit up the lives of all those around you, and made the world a better place just by being in it.

Phyllis was my great aunt, Grandma Mimi's sister. All us kids called her Auntie Filly Folly. She was full of fun for us kids and sang to us, make us happy with her invisible dog and taught us to be proud of ourselves. She blessed my life with her love for little me and I will never forget her. A bright star in the sky of my life!

In early November I met Phyllis for the first time at Heritage House, although over the years having heard much about her and her unique life from her sister Adele. Bruce and Carol, Phyllis's very loving and attentive son and daughter in law along with Adele introduced me to her. Even though she was in a subdued state she immediately perked up and I could feel all of the substance and charm that had once been her everyday persona in life. As I spoke with her she responded mostly with nonverbal, facial expressions but they were very telling, feeling the presence she imparted to so many others during those day that she brought joy to their lives, bringing joy to me in those moments. Rest well dear Phyllis, rest well, you leave joy and happiness, love and blessings in your wake
