ROBERT CROWDER Obituary

Robert Bruce Crowder Loving son, brother, uncle, friend, world traveler, diver, cultivator of orchids, baker of cookies. Born September 11, 1948 in San Francisco. Died October 17, 2010 while vacationing in Indonesia. Growing up in Walnut Creek, CA and Huntington, NY, Bobby collected rocks, bugs, and injured birds fueling a healthy curiosity of the natural world that would be a theme throughout his life When the Giants moved to San Francisco, Bobby, living in New York, became an ardent fan. One of his prized possessions was a baseball autographed by the entire 1962 team. Years later when Bobby moved back to the bay area, he became a season ticket holder, attending many spring training camps and knew that 2010 could be their year (like every other year). After leaving John Glenn High School in 1966 Bobby embarked on a long string of adventures starting with attending the University of Delaware, then his move back to the Bay Area. He served in the US Navy working on computers in nuclear submarines. He spent many summers searching for gold in the high Sierras, traveled throughout Mexico each fall and spent winters skiing in Squaw Valley. He received his BS degree in Biology from the University of Oregon in1977 and managed the Chi Omega sorority to its first appearance in the softball intramurals final. Soon thereafter he settled in Sausalito, CA and began a career in residential real estate with Frank Howard Allen in Greenbrae. He loved the people he worked with and built longstanding friendships with many of his clients who became extended members of his family. For Bobby, life was all about his family and friends. He was accepting and supportive of everyone and welcomed new members with open arms. As a friend you could also expect him to call you out when you needed it and trusted his motivation in doing it. Each Christmas Bobby would disappear for a few days reemerging with 150 dozen of his patent pending oatmeal cookies. You knew you were in good standing when he counted out your dozen. Bobby looked out for all his friends and family. Bob's greatest passions were scuba diving and underwater photography. He dived extensively in the Pacific, venturing to Palau, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, the Marshall Islands, and Fiji. He also dived in the Caymans, the Dominican Republic, and Baja California. Having been on thousands of dives, in recent years he became increasingly concerned as he witnessed increasing ecological damage to the undersea environment. Preventing the destruction of coral reefs due to blast fishing and agricultural runoff, and stopping the decimation of shark populations to satisfy the growing appetite for shark fin soup were of immense importance to Bob. When he wasn't diving, Bob developed a green thumb. An active member of the Marin Orchid Society, Bobby cultivated and nurtured over 500 Orchids at his Sausalito home. When not at home, he could be found in his parents' garden tending the raspberries, strawberries and vegetables and harvesting its bounty for the family. Bobby never met a tomato he didn't like. Bobby is survived by his parents, Jackie and Bob Crowder of Belvedere/Tiburon, his sister Sally Leonard of San Francisco, brother Jimmy Crowder and sister-in-law Gina Crowder of Portland, sister Peggy Campbell and brother-in-law Bill Campbell of Colorado Springs, niece Meagan Crowder of Denver, CO, nephew Nick Leonard of San Francisco, and nephew Bobby Crowder of Portland, OR. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions in Bob's name be made to Coral Reef Alliance www.coral.org or Shark Savers www.sharksavers.org.

Bobby was a wonderful childhood friend, full of zest and adventure. I remember us vividly (trying) to watch the NY Giants playing in New Haven, CT from the Crowder attic with a rabbit-eared TV. There may also have been unauthorized nighttime test drives of his dad's Austin Healy around neighborhood ...

Bobby, as I always called him, was a kind and gentle spirit from my first meeting in the Old Chester Hill gang until several years ago when he took me, my wife and two teenage children on a tour of Muir Woods. They instantly bonded with him and his boyish enthusiasm in describing the trees. He never had other than a kindness for others, even when he was the subject of a practical joke or a hard block. His spirit lives on.
My prayers to Sally and Mr. and Mrs Crowder.

To Bobby's Family:

I send you all my prayers during this difficult time. I am in shock to read this news. I grew up with him in my neighborhood in Huntington, NY and I went to John H. Glenn with him and graduated with him in 1966. He was such a character in school. Such a fun person. Obviously, we have not connected in years even though we live just miles apart. From what I have read about him, he was a very special person and I am so glad I had the opportunity to be a small part of his early life.

I am shocked to hear about Bob. I grew up with him in NY and he was part of my wedding party. We got together about 3 years ago when he came back east.
How sad when his beloved Giants are on the verge of a World Series victory.
To Bob's parents, brother and sisters along my heart felt sympathy goes out to you all.

Dear Jackie, Bob, Sally, Jimmy, and Peggy:

I am in shock - I cannot image the loss you are feeling. I had my usual lively and humor-filled chat with Bobby right before he left for Indonesia.

Bobby and I grew up together, went to high school together, played on the football team together, and got into many a jam together during our teenage years. We lost contact with each other after HS but re-connected when I moved to San Francisco. I was always amazed at Bobby's breadth of interests and we were both fanatic SF Giants baseball fans - which was the source of many discussions over the years. In addition to his outward bravado, energy and constant humor, Bobby was a very sensitive and caring man who would go out of his way to help you - no matter what.

I will miss Bobby dearly. My heartfelt condolences to Jackie, Bob, Sally, Jimmy, and Peggy

Bobby Crowder was one of my closest childhood friends, a boistrous, joyful spirit. Though we hadn't seen one another in decades, when a couple of years ago he heard I'd moved west to LA, Bob flew down (with another friend, Paul Munao) simply to say hello. Very sweet, like the boy and man he was. This is damn sad news ...

I lived next door to Bobby for the better part of the last 5 years. Bob was a kind and generous soul, a great neighbor and a dedicated and deeply loyal friend. He dropped me off some beautiful orchids to brighten up my new place in SF a few days before he left for Indonesia and we had a nice, albeit quick visit. I am thankful for having had the opportunity to say good bye and will sorely miss our conversations about all the things in our lives. We became good friends and confidantes over the last few years and he always spoke glowingly and with tremendous pride of his family. I will miss him greatly! I know it has been a tough year in general for your clan. I wish I had the words to express my condolences. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

PS-I find it fitting that that the Giants are in the World Series and the Oregon Ducks are # 1 in the country. I can see Bobby up there making friends and enthusiastically cheering them all on!!

Bob recruited me to be his Spring Training buddy back in the ‘80s. For five years, we traveled to Scottsdale to get out of the rain and follow the Giants as they played exhibition games around the desert floor. We stayed in a seedy “executive suite motel , where Bob always got the bedroom because I could close the door against his thunderous snores. Some highlights:
Of course, we would never buy a legit ticket. My job was to negotiate with the scalpers outside the stadiums, and beat the prices down.
It didn't matter where our seats were, because we never sat in them. Bob was the consummate crasher, and would bolt for front-row seats. One year we sat with Chub Feeney and Bart Giamatti, president of the National League. Bob had lots of tips for Peter and Debbie McGowan when we sat in their box the first year they owned the team. And I remember bob tipping Giants manager Roger “Humm Baby Craig that an outfielder was out of place. Roger made the change immediately, came back and said, “Thanks, Crow-dog!
Bob refused to pay the outrageous prices for food at the Scottsdale Stadium. Instead, we would crash the staff cafeteria across the street at the hospital. He was the only doctor in short-shorts and Hawaiian shirt.
At night, we would hit the baseball joints, where Bob would chat with players like Kevin Mitchell and Bob Brenley, and media types Herb and Christopher Caen and Harry Carey. We would always make sure we were in Scottsdale to celebrate St Paddy's day.
When not at the ballpark, Bob loved to hike the South Mountains, followed by a meal of fiery Mexican food.

Bobby was a natural born naturalist. I grew up with Bob during the time he lived in Huntington, N.Y. He was always finding some wounded creature, and nursing it back to health, capturing butterflies, and mounting them, finding garter snakes, almost anything that moved caught Bobby's attention. So much was his preoccupation with little creatures than we nicknamed him "Critter"
I have fond memories of Little Lake Sunnapee in New Hampshire where our two families vacationed together one summer, Boy Scout Camp, and Little League, and all the shenanigan's two teenage boys get themselves tangled in.
Although our paths diverged after High School, we had recently been reconnected when my mother passed from the planet this June.
Bobby I regret that our friendship on this side of death didn't quite reach its fullest potential. Though interrupted, I know we'll reconnect "on the other side".
With fondest memories of my childhood friend I must say I will miss your enthusiastic energy and comraderie.

To all the Crowders--we count you all as family and we will never forget all the good times the Seabrookes (Speebooks) enjoyed with the Crowders when we lived down the hill from you on Beaverhill Lane in Old Chester. Bobby is an unforgettable part of that--from his amazing hauls of blueberrys from Mr. Beh's (and then selling them for a good profit to all the neighbors), his love of animals, his cross-eyes in the sixth grade class picture that Miss Brittan said he "ruined" (but it became a collector's item), to his love of pyrotechnics (setting the field below his house on fire, along with his dad, my dad, and my brother). He was always fun to have at our house, goofing around with my brother Dick. Always, before leaving, he would check out what Mom was cooking, lifting all the pot lids and sniffing ("mmmm!") before he went home.
We will always hear Bobby's devilish laugh in our ears, see his big smile, and feel the warmth he always engendered in our hearts. We love you, Bobby!--Debby Seabrooke

Bob, Jackie, Peggy and family,

Terri-Lynn & Eddie called and told me what happened, I am so sorry.

I have fun memories of Bob with his ready laugh and big, bear hugs. All of life was an adventure to Bob. I recall fun times at the gold-mining camp. Bobbie's passion for diving was infectious . . . I wish I'd talked to him about shark finning and orchids.

Bob was a good friend and was very devoted to his family . . . for good reason . . . he was a love, an extension of his loving family. I am blessed to have known him.

With love,
Darris

After listening to his his great diving stories over the years and particularly Palau, we finally teamed up together for a trip in 2001. It was great and Bob is one of those individuals that add flavour to life and stand out in a crowd. I am very sorry he is no longer with us but am glad he really enjoyed and was passionate about many things in his life.
