Paul Miller Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 1, 2018.
Paul Rader Miller 1935 -2018 Paul died June 18, 2018 in San Anselmo, at home, from lung cancer. He was beloved by his son Bradford Paul Miller of Encinitas, CA, his wife of 25 years, Donna Paddleford Miller, and also survived by his daughter Mary Kate Miller of Santa Clara. Grandsons Jake and Cole Miller survive him, along with several nephews, cousins and two sisters-in-law. He was predeceased by his brother Larry O. Miller of Camarillo, California, and his half-brother John Miller of Santa Rosa. His daughter-in-law of 32 years, Michele Rios Miller, her relatives, the Miller extended family, long-time as well as long-ago colleagues, and many dear friends also miss this kind, witty, and wise man. His surrogate "kids", veterinarian and owner of San Geronimo Valley Veterinary Clinic Kelle Kearney, and College of Marin Biology Professor Joe Mueller of Inverness, grieve his absence, with gratefulness for his supportive guidance over the decades. Paul was a Marine from 1954-56, and a 1958 graduate of UCLA, earning a B.A. and a Masters. His passion was being an artist of many media and styles, including caricatures. He treasured teaching a cartooning course at the College of Marin in the late 1990's, where he was a 42-year faculty member (1962-2004) in the English and Communications departments. Paul was the Marin IJ's editorial cartoonist 1960-'62, was the editorial and sports cartoonist for the Novato Advance newspaper for most of the 1970's; he produced cover cartoons for the Pacific Sun and illustrations for the Tiburon Ark newspapers in following decades. He also had editorial cartoons published in the San Francisco Chronicle, and weekly editorial cartoons accompanying a column called 'Hit It and Quit It' for the-now defunct MoreMarin.com website, a division of SFGate.com. Paul was an athletic, health-conscious man, who loved our environment, reading, hiking, camping, body-surfing, horses and horseback riding. He was also quite talented at cooking. From 2004-16 he volunteered weekly for mounted patrol work at the Morgan Horse Ranch at Point Reyes National Seashore, where he also taught several annual horse sketching classes for the National Park's Field Institute. From approximately 2006-16 he volunteered, also on a weekly basis, in the art therapy program at Schurig Center for Brain Injury Recovery. Paul greatly valued the technical assistance, moral support and guidance given him in dealing with his cancer from those at Kaiser Permanente, San Rafael; the International Cancer Advocacy Network; Pacific Shores Medical Group, Long Beach, CA; and Hospice by the Bay. A donation in his name would be welcomed by Schurig Center for Brain Injury Recovery, Larkspur; Hospice by the Bay, Larkspur; Environmental Forum of Marin (marinefm.org); or the International Cancer Advocacy Network's Exon 20 Group (askican.org). Mr. Miller was a tough teacher who expected his students to gain as much knowledge as possible. On the first day of class, he asked how many people are here for the second time and about nine people stood up. There were 30 people in the class. He gave spelling tests on Monday, One hundred word test of the most commonly misspelled words. Besides that, we were required to turn in essays a week. Before the first essay, I made an appointment to see him in his office before I finished the first essay which was a question; Are civilians more religious that marines or the other way around I asked him series of questions and them I left. It has been twenty-something years but I will never forget Killer Miller,

Paul was a wonderful friend and colleague. I learned so much about how to live a life from this funny no nonsense guy. Paul always spoke his mind and didn't suffer fools kindly. I loved to see him walking across campus toward me, not knowing what was going to come out of his mouth, but sure I would enjoy it. He will be missed.
