Philip Bartlett Obituary

Philip Carleton Bartlett March 3, 1942 June 13, 2012 Dr. Phil Bartlett passed away peacefully at his home in Tiburon on June 13. He is survived by his wife Pamela, their children Carly and Tyler and three older sons and their wives: Ted Bartlett and Donna Hoghooghi, Dan and Keri Bartlett, and Will and Jamie Bartlett; eight grand-children, Owen, Jasmine, Ella, Millie, Quinn, Tatum, Declan and Willy. Phil was born in Seattle and grew up in Berkeley, then Orinda. He was in the first class at Miramonte high school but spent most of his time working on cars so he transferred to Robert Louis Stevenson School in Pebble Beach which propelled him to his beloved Stanford University and then Tulane Medical School. After an internship in New Orleans, Phil served his country in Vietnam in the US Air Force where he became a trusted physician and surgeon to locals and American troops. He returned to the US in 1970, retrieved his family from Miami and drove across our country in a VW Bug to buy the first family home in West Portal with Vietnam poker proceeds and began his residency at UCSF. Dr. Bartlett served San Francisco for 40 years as a highly respected adult and pediatric otolaryngologist (ear, nose & throat). Dr. Bartlett's patients loved his smile, bow ties, calm yet confident demeanor and results. Phil loved his family, being outdoors, roses, cars, Mozart and Stanford Football. Childhood in the Trinity Alps and college summers with the US Forest Service in Tahoe lead to years of family camping, river rafting, hiking and skiing. He was a member of The Guardsmen and the Bohemian Club. A memorial service will be scheduled for family and friends. The family requests the memorials be contributions to The Guardsmen: www.Guardsmen.org and The Stanford Cancer Institute: http://cancer.stanford.edu/ help/gift.html

Today I picked up the phone to call Dr. Phil about my usual ear injury from sports, the 'perforated ear drum'. Having heard the news, I'm at a complete loss... Phil gave me so much confidence when I needed to see him and I now feel such a great personal loss as I have come to realize that he was much more than a doc to me. The world, and my life, was made better by the presence of Phil Bartlett. Condolences to the family, to my friend Dan, and RIP Dr. Phil.

Phil was my roommate and very close friend at Stanford University. After graduation, about 50 years ago, we kept in touch and intimately knew that our frienship lasted through time and distances. He was always the same, a gentleman with plety of wit, a great friend. His sudden death is indeed very sad news.

I owe my very life to Phil Bartlett. In January 1987, I met him
as a patient referred by a dermatologist, who had noticed a
swollen lymph gland on the left side of my neck. Dr. Bartlett,
after examining my neck, feared the presence of a throat
cancer metastasis and performed almost immediate surgery, followed by 7 weeks of radiation directed at the
primary source of the malignancy in my throat. Twenty five
years later, I am fully cured, and have gone on to lead a
healthy life. Five other members of my immediate family
died from some form of the disease, so I consider myself to have been quite fortunate to have had the benefit of
Phil's knowledge and practice. Over a relatively short course of time, we became good friends. Upon visiting his
Tiburon home when he first moved in, I noticed a wine cellar--emblematic of his deep interested in the subject.
From that point on, I would bring him two bottles of very
fine and/or rare wine each year: one bottle to mark the
anniversary of my cancer treatment, and one from my
regular trips to Europe[especially appreciated by him, since
French wines lose something when shipped commercially
to California]. I used to threaten to stop bringing him wine
if he failed to keep me alive. Little did I imagine that he
would pass on so prematurely. I will treasure his memory
as a patient and a friend for the rest of my own days.

Phil's passing is shocking. I looked forward to seeing him soon. Blessings to his extended family, I am sure, are offered by
everyone who experienced his quiet, authoritative , calming expertise just as I did. Be reassured that thousands of patients experienced the touch one of the very special persons in our profession.
Phil was as avid a powder skier, outdoorsman, volunteer physician, and friend as he was a fine doctor. I never forgot the conversation, early in our careers, where he explained the sense of duty he felt towards offering expert opinion in special circumstances to protect patients and preserve the standards of the practice of medicine.
Phil's fine family is a tribute to a wonderful man.

I was so sorry to read about Dr. Bartlett's passing in the SF Chronicle today. I've known him for 16 years as a patient, Tiburon neighbor and in occasional social circles.

In a nutshell, Dr. Bartlett was an excellent human being. He was so gifted as a professional and as a person.

You always knew that his feet were on the ground and he offered the best. He was the original article, with or without the bow tie.

I am sending my heartfelt condolences to Pam and all of his family.

This from an Orinda friend who remembers Phil from grade school, Miramonte (until his parents realized car repair was not going to be his career and sent him off to RLS; loved that part), and Stanford. A wonderful human being, and as he revealed to us at some point in grammar school, a descendant of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, Josiah Bartlett. Or so he said; we never checked. He will be missed.

Dear Pam and family,
Being out of town, I just minutes ago received a message from fellow ENT Dr. Roger Crumley, a friend of ours, telling me the shocking news of Phil's unexpected passing. We will all grieve his loss in our own ways, for he was bigger than life, a great human being, a gifted physician and surgeon, a dear, devoted husband and father, and a loyal friend for over 42 years. My tears are falling as I write this, for I will miss his special smile and unwavering warmth.

I just saw this notice in the newspaper and was sad to see this. I met Dr. Bartlett about 30 years ago when my daughter was having ear problems and he was so kind and caring. He ended up doing three surgeries on her ears that took her from 30% hearing loss to 5% in her right ear. Then, when she was about 20, he removed her tonsils. He was so gentle and helped both of us so much. I had realized a few years before he retired that he had been such an important part of our lives and finally gave him a card thanking him. The next time we saw him, he said how much he appreciated it. What a gentleman, wonderful doctor and kind person he was. We were so sad when he retired and again now to learn of his passing away. Condolences to his family and know how many lives he touched in such a positive way.
