Susan Pey Obituary

Susan Korol Pey Susan Korol Pey, the northern California wine and restaurant innovator who created several new wine brands and elevated the fine wine dining scene across the western United States, died suddenly and unexpectedly on March 1, 2016. She was 52. Susan pioneered the renaissance of winegrowing in west Marin County in 1999 with her Pey-Marin Pinot Noir. She was the first to plant Riesling in this cool climate region and today more than 20 wineries produce wine in the area. In 2000, Susan was recruited by restaurateur and visionary Larry Mindel to oversee the beverage program at the 22-unit Il Fornaio restaurant group. She has been the driving force in its ground-breaking program ever since, garnering many awards, including multiple Wine Spectator Award of Excellence. In this role Susan actively promoted the diverse, hand-made wines of Napa, Sonoma, and obscure regions of Italy. Asked to speak frequently at hospitality conferences, Susan always pioneered the hand-made, the artisanal, and the unique. A true gourmand, Susan will be remembered not only as a visionary winemaker and hospitality executive, but as a superb chef, with her culinary leanings toward the lighter side of Asian and Italian cuisine. Her many friends knew that when it was dinner at Sue's, it would be a remarkably authentic, delicious and raucous experience. Sue's wine industry friends fondly remember her for her remarkably deft palate and a razor-sharp memory of the wines she had evaluated. Known for her boundless energy, Susan will be remembered most for her loving and caring demeanor and unbelievable generosity. Although she achieved success in her career and many other areas, she always preferred spending time with her daughters and husband her number one love and priority. Determined to stop the scourge of breast cancer, she was a tireless advocate for the Breast Cancer Fund and one of its leading individual fundraisers. Susan was also fiercely passionate about women's reproductive rights and actively supported the National Association for Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (NARAL). Susan is survived her by soul mate, husband and best friend of 33 years, Jonathan Pey, daughters (and best friends) Lauren, Alexandra and Cameron, her parents Harold & Iris Korol of Palo Alto, three siblings, several in-laws and nieces and nephews. Susan Pey lived life every moment richly and fully - and expects us all to do the same. The family requests donations in memory of Susan Pey be made to the Breast Cancer Fund at www.breastcancer fund.org/donatenow - or mail to: Breast Cancer Fund at 1388 Sutter Street, Suite 400, San Francisco, CA 94109 indicating that it is in memory of Susan Pey.

I was shocked to here that Sue Pey was gone. Her family was a part of the Children's Cottage Co-op, as was mine. I always admired Sue's zest for life. She will be missed.

Jonathan, Pey Daughters and Family,
20 years ago Sue and I met for the first time in what would become many years of tasting wines at the SF Chronicle Tasting Panel with Gerald Boyd, Rick Jones and many others. As you know we developed a great friendship over the past 20 years, and I will surely miss that. Her smile and laugh were captivating. Always caring, never selfish.
Not a day goes by that we don't think of Sue.
I raise a glass to Sue!
Yours Truly,

I love Susan's wine and loved meeting her at a special event. What a lovely and dynamic person. It was daring to create a local Riesling- the wonderful, bone-dry, Pey Marin, my very favorite local white wine. I was so very sorry to hear that such a wonderful person as she clearly was passed away so young. Too soon.

Susan was wonderful, to us here at Il Fornaio, Las Vegas. She had a genuine warmth and charisma that made whomever she was talking to feel that they were the only ones in the room. We relied on her vast knowledge, and appreciated her approachability. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jonathon and the girls. We already miss her a lot.
Sincerely,

I met Susan only twice, on wine tastings throughout Italy. You would think that meeting someone only twice there wouldn't be much connection there. But, because Susan was so inviting and a genuine person, I felt like one of her lifelong friends. Unfortunately, you don't get the chance to meet many people with those qualities. I'm just lucky that our paths crossed, even so briefly. Our physical world is at a loss now that she's gone, but the universe is bigger than ever occupied by Susan's soul.

The staff, board and friends of the Breast Cancer Fund are deeply saddened by the loss of our friend and dedicated advocate for our work. Susan will be dearly missed. She was a faithful hiker on the Peak Hike for Prevention on Mt Tam every year, raising funds for our work but more importantly demonstrating to generations of families who have endured breast cancer in their lives that there is hope. We send our love to her family and close friends.

Such a wonderful vibrant and caring presence.
I count myself lucky to have known Sue and will keep her example and her memory with me always.

There are no words that can describe what a tragic loss this is. I will be forever grateful for the 18 years that I had with my dear friend SueP in San Anselmo. Especially the years living on Nokomis. The spontaneous dinners at each others houses, our kids running back and forth playing, picnics, hiking, the list goes on and on. SueP was the best friend anyone could ask for. Her love, support and generosity was beyond admirable.

She was an Angel on Earth and the bar just got set much higher in Heaven.

My love goes out to Jon, Lauren, Alex and Cam. And also to her wonderful parents Iris and Hal.

I will forever miss her. xoxoxoxoxSueB
