Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Joseph J. Altmann US Army Staff Sergeant. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Sincerely,

To the family of Staff Sgt. Joseph J. Altmann:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. For more information call (651/286-7296) or email the office ([email protected]) and leave your name and contact information.

Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Respectfully,

There's a land
Where the birds are singing
And the skies are always blue,
On the other side of the rainbow
Where your soldier waits for you.

Safe at last from the sins of mankind
And the ravages of war
On the other side of the rainbow
Is the child that you adore.

In their eyes is the light of heaven~
On their face is the same loved smile~
On the other side of the rainbow
Where they'll greet you in a while.

May your sorrow be replaced with the joy of the memory of Joseph.

Be well,

Deepest sympathy to all of the Altmann family. Know how proud we are of Joe and the sacrifices he has made. I was not able to get to know Joe on a deeper level, but from what I did know of him, he was a great kid and I am positive an even better man. He was always kind and considerate through school which led him into adulthood and the most honorable life. Love to all who have been affected by this tragic incident. Including his wife, family, friends and all of the soldiers around the world who are risking their lives to save ours.

Your son has given us all a great gift. Our country is free because of brave men and women that are willing to risk their lives for all of us. He paid the total price and for this we say thank you and grieve for your loss. No parent should see their child's life end. We pray for your family, his wife and all those he loved. What a great man you have raised. If we could, we would wrap our arms around all of you until the pain leaves. We cannot, and the pain will not leave. We can only pray that God holds you close to his heart.

To Nikki and the entire Altmann family --

Nikki, so many times I fondly remember hearing you tell stories about Joe, that I feel like I almost knew him. It tears me up to know that you and your family are dealing with this terrible tragedy. I cannot possibly imagine the pain you all are experiencing at a time like this. Please know that many of us are avavailable to offer any support or lend an ear anytime you need one.

I know that as time passes by, while memories and feelings never fade, that Joe's life, while cut far too short, meant something incredible, and that he died in a way that many of us can only hope to strive for; one of extreme honor.

On behalf of a grateful nation...

No words anyone can offer can take your pain away...this I know...even tho' I'm only 15 years old. I would like to be a guest speaker at SGT Joseph Altmann's funeral and would be honored to do so. I'm an Eagle Scout, founder of Do Salute, (which is on Facebook) and recently earned the 2011 Young Person of hte Year award in Wausau Wisconsin. I speak at veterans, soldiers, and patriotic events. I know little things at times such as these can mean alot, so my offer is as genuine and heartfelt as the many other prayers I'm sure you are receiving. It's probably overwhelming in so many different ways; while there must be so many other details you have to tend to. I love our soldiers and veterans and started an organization called Do Salute which invites everyone to honor our soldiers and veterans everyday, and not just on Veteran's Day. Sending you Love and God's Peace during this very difficult time and please know my heart is heavy, even tho' I didn't know your son personally, because I do care and so do alot of other people and because it's the right thing to do because we are proud Americans who will NEVER FORGET and ALWAYS REMEMBER our Fallen Soldiers. From my heart to yours. John Ricki Weber Wausau, WI 715.370.3758 (I got adopted from Russia three years ago and from the moment I landed in Atlanta, GA I tasted freedom for the very first time and i'll never forget how sweet that freedom is and this is why I do what I can do show our armed forces how grateful I am that they have made such a beautiful country for me to be all who I can be and a country that welcomes my very best. I salute you Sgt. Joseph J. Altmann and thank you from the bottom of my heart. My email address is: [email protected]

Dear Altmann family,

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I'm home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I'm only a civilian
And I don't even know if it's allowed

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

For those missing in action;
for those who didn't make it home.
I know you're in God's presence you are not alone.
For every neatly folded flag;
for every shattered family
I will do the only thing I know to dignify your memory.

I salute you, allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
my humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.

I salute you.

I Salute You.

Your Joseph had the same first name, and middle initial of my brother Joseph J Boehm who is also serving in the same 27th Infantry Regiment that your's served in. My brother spoke of him once or twice in our brief phone calls. Our Familys hearts are broken and we mourn with your family. We have a prayer on our hearts everyday for my brother, and his regiment. I pray and hope from the bottom of my heart that your family will eventually find healing and comfort. Thank you Joseph J Altmann for serving your country, and giving it your life, May it never be in vain or taken for granted.

My deepest condolences.
All the love & prayers in heaven, and on earth to your family.

Our hearts go out to the family of Staff Sgt Altmann. You are so right, your Christmas will never be the same. We know this because our own son, Pfc Travis Krege, 2-27th inf., was KIA 12/6/06. We send our prayers to our fellow Gold Star family members, and we will never forget Joseph and what he died for.
