I am so sorry and shocked to hear of your tremendous loss. I learned of this terrible news today as I was browsing the Penn State online alumni directory. Rich and I were classmates in the nuclear engineering major at Penn State. We studied together during late nights in Hammond Building, ate grilled stickies at the Diner, graduated the same year, and then it seems we lost our hair at the same rate. He was always quick with both smile and wit. It is evident that the promise and energy within him then foretold his many accomplishments. Please accept my deepest and warmest sympathy.

Hi Susan and Zoe,
I'm sorry I took time to write this message, but I couldn't find the words to describe my pain and how I really feel about Rich.
He was a great hostdad and I will never forget how he made me feel like I was a member of your family.
Few times I was lost, few times I was homesick or upset , and he always cheer me up when I needed it. I remembered once, he took me in his arms and told me "anne, everything is gonna be fine"...
My year in America wouldn't have been as awesome as it was without Richard ( he was always making fun at me when I was saying this word, remember ? ^^) and I thanks God I had the chance to be with all of you for all this months.
Our great christmas tree hunting, Thanksgiving, violin lessons by skype, prayers at dinners made my year unforgetable.
thanks richard for everything, and I know you're here with us, I know you helped me when I felt useless in france. You are in my heart.
I'll keep you and your family in my prayers!
Love,
Anne.

Dear Ms. (Christine) Martin, Pam, and Susan and family,
I was SO shocked and saddened to learn of Rich's death. For nearly 40 years I've counted him a significant part of my life--since we met in 9th grade Communicant's class at 1st Presbyterian, Allentown. He was my first true love and although we were mostly goofy teenagers, even when we broke up after more than a year of dating, I always counted him a friend. I'm so sorry I last saw him in college (although my parents hired him when he and his dad were in business, so I had some news at times).
I loved Rich's sense of humor, his intellect, and even way back then he showed sgns of the drive that apparently characterized his entire life. I find it sweet and odd that I chose a career in medicine, married a computer geek, and my step-son is a phenomenal physicist--those parallels with steps/aspects of Rich's life will help keep him in my heart's memory.
Although his photo shows balding and a mustache, he looked more like Justin Beiber (including the hair!) when we were kids and to me he really looks just like when we met.
Having had plenty of loss in my own life, I DO know your profound pain and loss, and the horror and numbness that go with it. Keep trusting that God is still in charge--you don't have to understand, He does, and you will be together before you know.
With love for those he loved,
Sarah M

I recognized his picture. My last two semesters on the island were during the first two semesters he was there and I greatly admired his courage at studying medicine with somewhat younger classfellows. To me, he was "that dignified guy with the intense focus and the mustache". I exchanged pleasantries with him on a few occasions during our respective class break times. I am shocked today to read of Richard's death. He affected many of us for the better. May his family ultimately find peace and my heartfelt sorrow and sympathy goes out to them.

Susan,
My heart-felt condolences to you, Zoe, and Richard's entire family.
I received word of Richard's tragic and untimely death by email on Thursday evening, Dec 01, from a fellow Coast Guard Auxiliarist. I was sickened by the loss of my old friend and it weighed heavily on my heart and mind all day at work on Friday. I got out of work between sunset and dark that day ( St. Lukes Hospital, Allentown Campus ). As I crossed Hamilton St. and walked along 18th St.I spotted a large bird circling the parking lot. It was a fully mature bald eagle! "He" circled twice at less than 100 feet above the ground then disappeared over the rooftops. I am convinced that this was a divine message to reassure and comfort me. I hope that God (and Richard) will likewise comfort your grieving heart during this tragic time in your life.

Sue, Kayla & Zoe,
So many others have said all the right things and I share their sentiments. Please know that I am here and happy to help out your family anytime night or day.
I have been remembering a trip we made back to PA several years ago. Ellie and I stopped by to see you at Broadhead Rd, but you were at a meeting (imagine that!). Richard was so sweet and entertained us as we caught up a bit.
All the people's lives he touched were fortunate to be a part of Richard's impressive involvements and accomplishments. I have been fortunate to have some of my time intertwined with you and your family, including Richard.
I will see you over the weekend at the Memorial.
Much love and strength to you all.

How elegant and heart-felt you have written! No question, Richard will be with you all the time - that's a given. The big hole in your heart will be filled with happy and fond memories you and Richard had together. Life is all about love and be loved. You and Richard had certainly achieved that. What greater love is there than when you said, "All I wanted was for you to be happy."?
Our deepest sympathy to you and your family.

What a tragic loss of a truly special person. When Zoe was attending classes at PYT, I got to know Rich a bit better as we would chat away the hour while our children danced. I always looked forward to his insights and enjoyed his clever wit. It was always evident how very much he loved Kayla and Zoe and they will surely miss his guidance and council. My heartfelt condolences are expressed to your family during this time. You will have a spectacular guardian angel looking over you.

Dear Sue, Kayla and Zoe, and Mrs. Martin,
I feel so honored and blessed to have known such a stellar gentleman as was your husband, father and son. Although I've only known him since you were married, I feel like I've known him forever. He was so kind and easy to be with. So "supernatural" in an egocentric world. Rich was truly one of the most compassionate people I have ever met. He made plenty of time to help and give to others when there was obviously no profit for him. How many people can we truly say that about? And that says it all about a human being and is probably the most God-like quality we can have. Selflessness! With love, kindness, warmth, humor, intelligence, and faith all mixed in. I will miss my friend and sailing comrade, Rich, though I know, in faith, that he is at rest with his Lord.
I pray that the peace and comfort of Christ will hold you all so very close in this most tragic time.
I love you, Sue.

I cannot express how sorry I am for your loss. I know how much Rich loved you each and that you will miss him terribly. I wish I could take away this tragedy and give you back your husband and father for I know he had so much more to give and share with each of you. I am happy to know that Rich was doing what he loved when God took him to heaven. I know he is watching over you as he did in life and will guide you along your continued journeys. I will remember his smile on the day you were married Sue because I know those were the times he was happiest...with you and family. If there is anything that I can do to help during this time, please do not hesitate to let me know. I love you tons!

Dear Sue,
I am so sorry for your loss. I didn't have the opportunity to know Richard well but my parents thought the world of him. He was an enormous help to them. As accomplished as he was, he never let you know it. What a wonderful role model for Zoe. I know that no words can bring him back and fill that void in your heart, but I hope that in time you will be able to find a bit of respite from the sadness you are feeling now. My thoughts and prayers to you and your family.

We were proud to have Richard as a member of the New York CTO club, an invitation-only, not-for-profit group of technology leaders. Richard joined our group in 2005, meeting us face-to-face occasionally, but staying active on our email list, frequently helping and advising other CTOs (Chief Technology Officer).
When he announced to us his new directions in medicine last year, his concern was that he would no longer be a part of our group. We assured him he would continue via email, and he indeed kept advising others in his areas of expertise. Many members also expressed admiration in Richard's new calling, he clearly inspired us all.
We all miss him, and will particularly miss his impact on technology in the New York/North East. Our thoughts and best wishes to his family and friends.

Hi honey,
It's me. I'm still in shock that you won't be walking in the door next week. Please be with me as I go through your things and remember all the fun times we had. Please be with me as we watch Zoe's recitals, and celebrate holidays, and at 6:40am every morning. In fact, please be with me all the time. All I wanted was for you to be happy. When I went to the Caymans and talked to your friends, they confirmed how happy you were when you left this earth. I do wish this big hole in my heart didn't exist. I know you loved me so much, and I hope you know how much I loved you too. Take care of everyone up there as I can't wait to see you when I get up there.
Love always and forever,
Your wife, Susan
