Clifford Robert Hog Werst

Clifford Werst Obituary

C. Robert Werst
Clifford Robert Hog Werst, 78, died in his home in Gap, on February 7, 2009. Born in Bethlehem, on March 19, 1930, Bob was the son of Clifford C. and Mildred E. (Ohl) Werst. He was the husband of Diane (Szalay) Werst. Bob attended Franklin Junior High School and Liberty High School, where he played varsity basketball and football. After graduation from Liberty in 1948, Bob went on to Franklin & Marshall College, Lancaster. There, as quarterback, he led the Diplomats football team to their first-ever undefeated season in 1950. In 2000, he and his teammates were inducted into the colleges Hall of Fame. After a career as a salesman, which took him from Pennsylvania to New York, Indiana, and Florida, Bob returned to the Lehigh Valley in the 1970s. In his second career as a beloved bartender, Bob became well known to many in the greater Bethlehem area both for his talents as a mixologist, as well as his ability to make people laugh. In addition, he and his wife also operated Piggy Wiggys deli in Fountain Hill before they returned to Lancaster County for Bobs final years. An avid sports fan, hilarious raconteur, and possessed of the most generous spirit behind a feisty demeanor, he will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Survivors: Carrying forth his memory in survivorship are his loving and adoring wife; son, Gary Robert Werst of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; sister, Elizabeth Ann Williams of Wilson; four grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, including his longtime companion, Piglet. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Patricia Ann, and sister, Phyllis Talarek. Services: A gathering of his family and friends will be held at the Tally-Ho Tavern in Bethlehem at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday to celebrate Bobs life.

I first met Bob at Coatesville Country Club when I joined 8 years ago. To say the least, he was quite a character. When we had an opportunity to chat one on one, I realized how much history this man had lived through. To say the most, he had quite a life. I will miss his wit and sense of humor.

My condolences to Diane and the rest of Bob's family. I wish you all the best!

I didn't know this man very long. I considered him to be a sweet and loving sole. He was a blessing in my life. He always had a smile for me. I will miss him.

Hog's sharp wit and spectacular sense of humor made him a joy to be with. But more than that he was a good man and a good friend. Although it has been many years since I last saw Hog, he was never very far from my mind and every time I think of him I smile. That is quite a gift. Thanks, Hog, for the memories.
