I had the privilege of working with Dr. Shapiro while an undergrad at Lehigh. His work developing the framework for objectively and quantitively observing students in a school based setting is considered the defacto gold standard.

Most importantly, Dr. Shapiro was a fantastic teacher, mentor and person. There is one moment that typifies his character. It was graduation day and I was with my parents walking down the hill. Dr. Shapiro was driving by, saw us, and stopped his car and rushed out to meet us. He walked up to my parents, introduced himself and preceded to speak glowingly about the work we had done together and how I had a bright future ahead of me. 20+ years later I still remember how he made me feel, and I certainly know it made my parents very proud.

That one moment left a lasting impression that I'll never forget.

RIP. My condolences to his family and friends.

I'm heartbroken. I served as one of the dozens of Ed's assistants while my son played for him. We both owe Ed a great deal. I looked forward to every day we got to spend with him.

To the Shapiro Family,

My condolences to all of you on your loss. Dr. Shapiro was an aquaintence during my years at Lehigh, and, always had the time to say, "Hello, How's it going?" He was a definite asset to his field. He will remain forever within your heart and mind. Take care and God Bless!

Dear Sally and family,
I served as SPYA President and Softball commissioner and got to know Ed while he was the Baseball commissioner and board member. He had quite a passion for baseball and youth sports along with the right set of moral values for these positions. I really enjoyed working with him as he was very thoughtful, intelligent and a great communicator. I feel that I am a better person having known Ed, and all members of SPYA benefitted tremendously from Ed's leadership and service. May you be comforted during this time of sorrow with the knowledge that he positively touched so many lives in the community. He will truly be missed.
Sincerely,
Blake Tharp

Dear Shapiro Family,
I want you to know that I am very sorry and sad to hear about Ed's death. I share in your grief, and you are in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Ed and I became acquainted in the early part of 1985 during a couple of intake interviews at Lehigh when I was a student candidate for the graduate program in School Psychology. The conversations must have left a favorable impression because I was accepted into the program. Our relationship continued over the next five years with Ed as my program advisor and professor during several courses. Significant others impact all of our lives, and I believe Ed was responsible for being a powerfully significant influence with personal and professional development during and after my Lehigh experience. Please find some comfort in knowing that Ed truly inspired the fire of excellence to burn bright within my professional endeavors, and for this I am extremely grateful. We also shared a passion for the game of golf, and while the opportunity to play together never occurred, we did coincidentally meet on the first tee of a local course several years after my graduation. I vividly remember that during our brief greeting, I shared with him thanks that my career success in education was in large part due to him. We shook hands and then had a good chuckle, wishing each other well during the day.
With deepest sympathy,
James Miller

My sincere condolences on Ed's passing. I knew him through many years of his coaching Connie Mack baseball. My husband, Gary Andrew coached the Northern Lehigh team for many years. When he passed away almost 3 years ago, Ed attended his viewing and funeral along with many other coaches in the league. I told Ed that Gary considered him as his 'frenemy' in the league and always enjoyed the games between the 2 teams. I'm sure he will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all who were fortunate to know him.

Ed was a friend, a colleague and a mentor to me, especially as a member of my research advisory group (RAG) when I was VP Research at Lehigh. He was always a source of wisdom combined with a positive view of the education world and the world in general. He always brought humor to our discussions. All of we former members of the RAG will miss him.

Dr. Shapiro, Ed, was a Titan in the world of special education! His contributions were numerous and significant. Most importantly, many of America's children are succeeding because of Ed's efforts to improve how we teach students who are having difficulty in school. He will be missed.
