Gerhard Rayna Obituary

Gerhard Rayna, 72, formerly of Coopersburg, died June 24 in Luther Crest Health Center, South Whitehall Township. He was married to Ruth E. (Franges) Rayna for 25 years last November. He was a mathematics professor and computer scientist at Lehigh University, Bethlehem for 35 years before retiring in 1990. He received a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Harvard University, and a master's and a doctorate in the same from Princeton University. He was a former member of the American Mathematics Society and the Association for Computing Machinery. Born in Vienna, Austria, he was a son of the late Reza and Gizella Rajna. He was author of the book ''Reduce: Specific Computer Language for Algebraic Computation,'' and had numerous published papers in the areas of algebraic topology and computer programming. He was a former member of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi. Survivors: Wife; sons, David of Malvern, Long Island, N.Y., Jonathan of Dallas; daughter, Adrienne of Germansville; former wife, Marian of Dallas; seven grandchildren. Services: memorial, to be held at Lehigh University Packer Chapel at a later date. Arrangements, Stevens Funeral Home, Allentown. Contributions: Lehigh University, c/o Mathematics Department, National Parkinson Foundation, Miami, or Country Dance & Song Society, Haydenville, Mass.
