John Kleppinger Heyl of East Boothbay, ME, passed away on March 12, 2011 after a brief illness. He was 104. Mr. Heyl had a noteworthy architectural career in Pennsylvania and Maine. Born in Allentown in 1906, Mr. Heyl received a BA from Muhlenberg College in 1928 and a MA in architecture from Harvard in 1933. In that year he received the American Institute of Architects (AIA) 1st Medal honoring him as Harvards top architecture student. In 2006, Muhlenberg College awarded him an Honorary Doctorate in Humanities. Mr. Heyls career in Allentown spanned from 1933 to 1973. His projects include Allentowns J. Birney Crum Stadium, the Allentown Art Museum and the Baum School of Art. Among his many Pennsylvania historical restorations are Allentowns Trout Hall, the Troxell-Steckel House, the George Taylor House and the Ephrata Cloister. In 1958 Mr. Heyl co-authored the book Pennsylvania German Barns. Mr. Heyl was a member of Rotary International for 73 years, both in Allentown and Boothbay Harbor. He served on the boards of dozens of organizations including the Pennsylvania German Society, Allentown Symphony, Allentown Chamber of Commerce, Muhlenberg College Board of Trustees, Pennsylvania Folklore Historical Society, Lehigh County Historical Society, Wiley House, Boothbay Region Historical Society, State Commission for Maine State Museums and Maine Land Preservation Trust. He was a life member of Christ Lutheran Evangelical Church where he taught adult education classes and served as a trustee/deacon. Survivors: Mr. Heyl is survived by sons, John Konrad Heyl, Minneapolis, MN and Anthony Allen Heyl, Boothbay, ME; daughters, Mary Elizabeth Heyl Bauer, Bethlehem, PA and Frances Heyl; grandchildren, Jeffrey Anton Bauer, at large, and Anya Arsenault, Edgecomb, ME; and great-grandson, Casey Jeffrey Savastano of Edgecomb. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Florence Lemkau Heyl, and by brothers, George and Allen. Services: A memorial service is expected later in the year.
