Not sure what to say?

January 30, 2017

I want to thank everyone for being here today so that we can share some memories of our childhood and tell you about our Dad.

Many of you were here just 104 days ago, when I had the opportunity to share about my Mom. I think those 104 days were the hardest days of my dad's life. It's so strange to know that both my Mom & Dad are gone. I know my dad would not have believed the final days of his life would be spent in a nursing home. So I am thankful for the veterans and friends who took the time to visit my dad over the past few years.

In a moment, we'll be listening to Pastor Tim Young. I am forever grateful to Pastor Tim for making the time share scripture and pray with my dad each Friday. I don't believe it was just by chance that Tim stopped by.

My dad grew up in Emmaus, in a part of town called Hunktown. I'm not sure if people outside of Emmaus know of Hunktown, but it should have been on the borough map. My dad told many stories of good times and even some tragic times there. From his stories, I can tell that it was a part of Emmaus where people definitely had each others back.

He started his life path by leaving school early to join the Marines. He was very proud to have served his country & we were proud of him too. He would tell many stories of his time traveling afar. I remember one story where his Commanding Officer ordered him to sit down and write a letter home. Just to let his parents know he was alright.

My dad was tough and expected nothing less from me & my brothers. I think when you have someone who served his country in your family, Veterans Day isn't just a day that you celebrate once a year. Every day was Veterans Day in our home. My dad was so proud of being a Marine. I usually think of this quote when we gather at the triangle to observe Memorial Day: I can't believe God put us on this earth to be ordinary. Our dad was part of this extraordinary group of men & women, and if you read the history books and current events about our armed forces, they are still the best.

In December of 1959, shortly after his service ended, he married my mom. Soon they had 5 sons. My parents loved a great party and hosted many of them at our home. I remember so many of those days as if they were yesterday. The people of Hunktown and our parents helped make my brothers and I who we are today. It would be great if everyone had the opportunity to grow up in a community like ours.

My earliest memories of my dad were at the CWV baseball field. My dad could have talked for days about his players. He would be the first to tell you how the kids he coached played for the love of the game. CWV had a great winning tradition with an enthusiastic coach and the best moms and dads cheering us on. We all know the phrase Winning isn't everything, but his teams played with a desire to win. My dad coached many of Emmaus' finest players and if you wanted play more, you needed to improve. I know that even the best players received an earful of instruction from my dad. He even took his teams to tournaments outside the area, just so they had the chance to be the best they could be. He loved to tell everyone how great his players were. In later years, he kept track of those boys in every type of sport they played.

When his coaching days ended, he became one of Emmaus' biggest fans and every umpire, referee or official knew if they needed glasses by the end of the game. He loved to watch his five sons and later, his grandchildren compete in their athletic events. He was our biggest fan.

Sports were an important part of his life, but so was serving his community. Whether it was putting flags on the gravesites of our vets, helping with their funeral services, or marching in the Memorial Day Parade, he was there.

I know the days will pass when people say, Are you one of Bobby's sons? and I will miss that. But I won't ever forget that he was my Dad.

To the Fick Family,
I'm sorry for your loss. I remember alot of good times with your family. New Years Eve parties at your house when we were kids. The picnics at Community Park with all our families. Playing baseball for CWV and Bobby yelling at me for missing the cut off man at 3rd base. Your Mom and Dad were great people and well respected in the community and there back together now.

Even as a young boy playing ball at CWV I knew that my coach Bobby Fick enjoyed teaching kids the game of baseball. Many nice memories of playing ball on the many fields of Emmaus Little League with all the Fick boys.

Your Dad was a nice man.

Sorry for the loss of both your Mom and Dad,

ALLEN & SCOTTY:
SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT THE LOSS OF YOUR DAD!
HE WAS REALLY A GREAT "AMBASSADOR" OF "HUNKTOWN" AND I ALWAYS TOLD HIM HE COULD RUN FOR POLITICS. WHEN YOUR DAD WAS
MANAGER OF OWENS-CORNING, "MY DAD" APPRECIATED THE FACT THAT BOBBY TRIED TO IMPROVE THE "POND" @ THE DUMP AND TOOK INTEREST IN CLEANING-UP THE PROPERTY. EVERY EASTER, MY KIDS STILL REMINISCE ABOUT THE "EPIC" "BOBBY FICK" CWV EASTER EGG HUNTS. HE ALWAYS GOT A GREAT TURN OUT, MANY EGGS TO COLLECT AND HOW COULD YOU FORGET THE "SUPER BIG" CHOCOLATE BUNNIES AND THE "BIG RED ROOSTER". YOU COULD TELL HE WAS IN THE "MARINES" BECAUSE HE RAN THE EGG HUNT WITH "STRICK PROTOCOL"! IF YOUR FOOT WAS ON THE LINE OR ADULTS PICKED UP EGGS FOR THE KIDS "YOU WERE KICKED-OUT"! "CLASSIC BOBBY". IN CLOSING, HE NEVER, EVER, FORGOT TO ASK HOW "ANNA" (MY MOTHER IN LAW) WAS DOING. HE WILL BE MISSED! I SURE HE BE ELECTED INTO THE HUNKTOWN "HALL OF FAME". I COULD JUST RAMBLING ON!!, MY PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.
