JEROME NUNES Obituary
Jerome "Jerry" Nunes, a long time Atwater educator passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 13, 2010 with his family by his side.Jerome was born in Livingston on December 23, 1931. He attended Livingston schools and graduated from Merced High in 1949. He continued his education at Modesto J.C. then attended San Francisco State University receiving his degree and doing graduate work. Jerome spent one year teaching at the elementary level in San Francisco. He then returned to Atwater to teach two years at Mitchell Elementary, three years at Elmer Wood School, and five years as an English and reading teacher at Mitchell Senior Elementary.
While at Mitchell Senior he was the recipient of Freedom Foundation's Outstanding Teacher Award. After 10 years in the teaching field, he was asked to assume the principalship at Elmer Wood School, where he remained for 22 years until his retirement in 1987. After his retirement, Jerome volunteered in his nieces' class at Mitchell School.
Jerome was dedicated to the education and well-being of the children of Atwater. It was his deepest wish that his school be a place where children could feel secure and know that an opportunity would be provided for awareness and self worth to help each child maintain their dignity.
Jerome was preceded in death by his parents John P. and Mary Nunes, sister Dorothea Sebastian and brothers John P. Nunes and Anthony Nunes. He is survived his sister Rosemary Silva (Larry) of Atwater, brother Joseph P. Nunes (Jeanette) of Grass Valley, CA and sister-in-law Edna Nunes of Bend, OR Jerome was a wonderful uncle to his many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Thursday, November 18, 2010 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Wilson Family Funeral Chapel, 1290 Winton Way, Atwater. Recitation of the Holy Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, November 19, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Atwater with burial immediately following at Winton Cemetery. Father Tom Timmings, Father Leonard Trindade and Deacon Canelo officiating. Donations in Jerome's names can be made to YMI Education Foundation or the charity of your choice.

I was asked this week about the teacher who made the biggest impact on my life. It was Mr. Nunes. He was so kind and supportive while expecting the most from his students. It was the first time that I´d felt seen and valued by a teacher. I ended up being a teacher and have done my best to emulate and honor him. I wish I´d taken the time to let him know how important he was in my life.

I was a student at Elmer Wood from first grade to sixth grade. Mr. Nunes was an amazing man and showed me kindness many times. My time at Elmer Wood was a very special time and a lot of that had to do with the environment that Mr. Nunes and his staff created.

Mr. Nunes was my first principal when I started school at Elmer Wood. He was the nicest and kindest man that I had met at that time in my life. He has always kept a special place in my heart and will always be there. Love you Mr. Nunes

Jerome was a generous, kind and loving man and Godfather to my daughter Kristy. During the years I was part of the Nunes family we shared many good times together and Jerome was always there with a kind word, helping hand and always a smile. His sense of humor and generosity was abundant. His loving spirit will remain with all of us who knew and loved him. My condolences to Joe and Rosemary and their families for the loss of their loved one.
