Donald Burr Obituary

Donald R. Burr "Chief"

Long time Resident of Campbell

Don was born September 17, 1934 in Grass Valley, CA. He entered into rest peacefully on October 3, 2010 after a challenging illness. He is survived by the love of his life, Darlene whom he was married to for 58 years, three children, Donald Jr., Cheryl Murphy and Julie Villalpando, son-in-laws, Tom Murphy and Ed Villalpando, ten grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and two brothers. He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Ruth Burr, three sisters and three brothers.

Don served in the United States Marine Corp. from 1951-1954. He settled in the City of Campbell, CA. Don was hired by the Campbell Police Department on October 1, 1956. From February 1972 to December 31, 1987 he served as the Chief of Police for the City of Campbell. Throughout his career with the Police Department, Don diligently studied to earn both his BA and Masters degrees at San Jose State University. After retiring from the Campbell Police Department, he was elected to the Campbell City Council in November 1988, and then again, in November 2000. He served as Mayor for four terms. He served his terms intermittently. Don termed out in 2008. This officially ended his service to his beloved City of Campbell. Don, also took on the duty as Interim Chief of Police for the City of Milpitas for six months in 1997 for which he felt very honored.

For leisure time, Don loved to be with his wife, Darlene, traveling, and spending time with his family. He, also, enjoyed playing golf with his friends. Don truly leaves a legacy of love and respect with his family, friends and co-workers. He is loved and will be missed by many!

My Papa Burr,
All the memories you have given to me are never to be forgotten. You see I do remember the great trips we went on to Disneyland, Washington, Knott's Berry Farm,.... and so on. But the simple times are the ones that I will cherish the most; just driving in the car and singing our hearts away, sitting on your lap while we played catch your thumb (you always let me win), movies with pie and ice cream on Saturday nights, listening to stories of your childhood, dancing in the garage, pushing me in the front swing, laying in your bed on a Sunday morning while we watched cartoons, just laying on your lap while you rubbed my back, and you always reminded me how much you loved me. You may have been a tough boss, Im sure, but you were the softest papa to me. I will always remember the way your smile could light up a room. You are a man with a great Legacy but I believe your greatest legacy is the family you have raised. Words can not express how much you are missed. I will never let your "little angel", Ashtyn, forget how much you loved her. I will always remind her of the great times you spent together. As you used to love to hear me say as a young child.... I la you papa.

Dear Darlene,
We were there at the funeral mass, but didn't want to bother you on that day. We just want to say that our thoughts and prayers are with you and we will remember Don fondly. We are grateful for all he did for our family. We will remember how he was there at the opening of Effie's restaurant and how his advice, sense of humor and just his presence enriched and brightened our lives. He will be missed by all who knew him. With Much Sympathy, Alex and Joan Kaldis

My very deepest sympathy and prayers are with you all. I was the Reserve Officer with Don on his first night on duty, and that was the beginning of a deep respect, and admiration for a good man.

I loved working with Don, meeting his beautiful wife Darlene, his friends, his sense of humor, and playing golf with him, particularly when we played at The Cypress Point Club, where the seam of his pants split. We could not stop laughing with him. I and so many will miss camaraderie, and good times.

My first football coach. I think he liked me because I liked knocking people down. He became a great mentor, and wonderful friend. He was always there for me. My sons knew him as "The Strongest Man in The World"
I will miss you.
