Remembering Father Raymond Devlin SJ for bringing me and my family into the Catholic Church April 1, 1961, and making two life-long Catholics out of my brother and me. For that alone, Ray is in heaven.

Fr. Devlin baptized my mother, brother, two sisters, and me, Bob Dunn, SI '70, on Easter Sunday 1961. I was born in 1952, so I was about 8 1/2 years old. He gave us instruction at home, and from the moment he began, I knew I was hearing the truth. He was the first priest I ever knew. He was the first to hear my confession, and it was at home. He was my brother's 1st year religion teach at St. Ignatius, and, according to my brother, Tom Dunn, '64, when Fr. Devlin heard that Tom was not Catholic, Fr. Devlin asked if Tom would like to become Catholic, Tom answered yes, and that is how it all began. I think of all the children he must have baptized, but I am most thankful it was Fr. Devlin who took care of me.

Thank you Fr. Devlin for being a wonderful leader, speaker and Father. My husband and I loved your witty homilies, your speedy confessions, and your gentle giant presence at OLOP. We love you and we know that you are enjoying your eternal reward with our Lord---the very one you helped us know better. You are missed.

Fr. Devlin's obit mentions his teaching Religion (among other subjects) at St. Ignatius High School back in the early 60s. But in those days, Religion was taught three days a week and Pubic Speaking the other two days to the same class. So I had Fr. Ray for Public Speaking as well during my sophomore year at S.I. Lots of fond memories of those days with his unique style of teaching both courses.

Father Ray and his dear brother Father Joe were greatly appreciated at Our Lady of Peace Church in Santa Clara. Their ministry in Confession and in encouraging parishioners gave visible form to the goodness and love of the invisible and heavenly Father. Father Ray, requiescat in pace!

What a loss. And now heaven's gain. Fr. Ray and Fr. Joe together again at long last. They don't make priests like the Devlins anymore, and we surely need them. May the lives you led inspire the best in us and may your example guide and teach as it always has. With love and gratitude always ...

Having been one of Fr. Ray Devlin's athletes I was able to see his devotion to both the youth he taught/coached and God. Fr. Devlin was a great man, Priest, coach and Friend. He was able to see the good in everyone and use this insight to mold youth for their lives as adults. He was able to change his approaches to best fit the individual youth and ensure that the youth performed to his/her absolute best. I continue to model much of my live after the insights that I received from Fr. Ray Devlin. Fr. Ray Devlin will be greatly missed by my family, as is Fr. Joe Devlin who baptized me. May God bless the Devlin Family and may the Virgin Mary watch over you.

Uncle Ray was a classic. He always wanted to help and to serve. He took a sincere interest in his nephews' and nieces' lives. Thousands of students benefited from his love of life and the Lord. He served with Uncle Joe in Vietnam and Thailand. Along the way, he became a mountain climber, emergency medic, missionary, wonderful priest, winemaker, Juvenile Hall counselor, ski instructor, coach, and teacher. He made every conversation lively. He will be missed!

Fr. Devlin as a friend and priest will be greatly missed by our entire family. Everyday he would pick up my brother for school at St. Joseph's and take him home again. Our family enjoyed having him join us for Thanksgiving dinner for many years. When having to make a difficult decision in my life I was ably to ask Fr. D for advice. With understanding and frank logic he advised me to resolve the problem. We truly will miss you. Our Deepest Sympathy to your family and the Jesuit Order.

Father Devlin... you made it across that final finish line, congrats--well done! I recall with a smile (and a grimace) that first "invitation" you offered this scrawny freshman to jog with you. I was sucking air at mile two, you continued chatting with me through mile ten! Remember senior year? I still chuckle when I think about tugging on that rope outside your window. You had attached it to your foot for the 2 AM wake-up call to say mass for us after the prom. Thanks for presiding at our wedding some forty years ago. Thanks for teaching me the meaning of perseverance, loyalty and service to others. Thanks for checking in with us and keeping us in your prayers. Glad you are now with your beloved brother Joe--I'd like to meet him someday. Looking forward to another "jog" with you, I'm in better shape now.. Ken Bonsi, Bellarmine class of 1969
