John McManus Obituary

John Paul McManus
Aug. 12, 1920~Aug. 15, 2013
Resident of Saratoga
John Paul McManus, resident of Saratoga since 1969, died peacefully August 15 2013. He was born in New York City, August 12 1920. He was a 1942 graduate of Manhattan College, New York. With his mathematics degree in hand, he enlisted in the US Navy and was sent to Officers Training School at the University of Arizona in Tucson. He was assigned to Meteorological training at NYU, and then went to serve with the Seventh Fleet as an Aeorological officer. He was soon transferred to PT Boats and served in New Guinea and the Allied invasion of the Philippines Islands. At the end of the war, he transferred into the regular Navy (USN), and remained on active duty at Naval Air Stations and aircraft carriers. While stationed at the Weather Center in San Francisco in 1984, he met his future bride, Marjorie Adele Dusto. That blind date was the beginning of a 64 year love affair! They moved to Carmel where John earned his Masters Degree in Aerological Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey. Following his service in Korea, John resigned his commission in the Navy. He began his civilian career with Lockheed Missiles and Space Co., Sunnyvale, Calif. as a Systems Integration Engineer working on the Polaris, Poseidon, and finally the Trident projects. John remained with Lockheed, also serving four years as a Lockheed Senior Staff Tech Rep. to the Navy's Special Projects Office. John retired in 1989, and enjoyed various hobbies including golf, water color painting, photography, and collecting family tree data. He was an active member of SIR, Branch 125. He leaves behind a loving family, including Marge, three daughters, Karen (Ron) Crampton, Susan (Chris) Ryan, Lisa (Tim) Cobb, and two sons, Scott (Beth) McManus, and Brett (Pamela) McManus, seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a sister-in law Melinda (Dana) Chase and family. His special gift to all of us was a once a year gathering of daughters, sons, and grandchildren, friends and a dog or two at Lake Tahoe, which continues after more than 55 years! A Memorial Service for John will be Saturday, Sept. 14, at 2:00 PM at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 13601 Saratoga Ave, Saratoga,CA. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford, www.lpch.org, or a charity of your choice.

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any man's death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.
