Berniece Strauss
Resident of Los Gatos
Born January 17, 1914 in Detroit, Michigan to Joseph and Leah Rosenthal, Berniece passed away peacefully on October 18, 2010. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Berniece is survived by her daughter Marilyn Campbell and husband Lawrence, her son Michael Strauss and wife Rebecca, grandchildren Michelle Campbell, Mark Campbell, Matthew Strauss and Merissa Bushey, and a total of eight great-grandchildren.
She came to California from Detroit at the age of 13. She faced many challenges in the early years of her life, but was determined to be successful. After graduating from Commerce High in San Francisco, she enrolled in the Lux Junior College for Girls. After one year, she got a scholarship from the National Council of Jewish Women to do a year-long internship at the Children's Hospital in San Francisco, where she learned medical technology. She married her beloved husband, Leighton Strauss, in 1938 and they remained married until his passing in 2002.
Full of energy and joy throughout her lifetime, Berniece was committed to caring for everyone around her. She was a bridge player, prolific seamtress, talented knitter, great cook and loved to bowl. She took great pride in doting on her family, and was well known for her love of Scottish Terriers. Always thankful for what she had, Berniece often donated her time and resources to local charities, such as Kainos and Hadassah.
She lived at the Terraces of Los Gatos for twelve years and had many wonderful friends. Her last three years in assisted living were pleasant for her because she was very social and loved all the activities. The Terraces staff members that tended to her needs were so caring, and Berniece greatly appreciated their kindness. Berniece Strauss will be greatly missed by her friends and family.
A memorial service will be held at the Terraces of Los Gatos at 800 Blossom Hill Road, Los Gatos, on November 21 at 10 AM.
