Elizabeth Hulsey Obituary

Elizabeth M. "Betty" Hulsey

Resident of San Mateo

Elizabeth M. Hulsey, known to one and all as "Betty," passed away peacefully on November 16 in the company of her family following a brief illness. Betty will be remembered for her sharp wit, her infectious laughter, her impeccable taste and her love of children - most of all her two grandchildren, George and Peyton.

Betty was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1934 and grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her father, Douglas MacCalman, was a carpenter and a teacher. Her mother, Ann, worked full-time while raising five daughters. Betty was the eldest. She married Royce Hulsey, an attorney, in 1958, and together they had a son, Zachary.

Betty and her family moved to San Mateo in 1967. They settled first in Fiesta Gardens and later purchased a home in Baywood, where she lived until her death. Betty was active in the Parent Teacher Associations at Borel Middle School and Aragon High School, including serving as PTA president at both schools.

In 1976, Betty began a long and successful career as a real estate agent in San Mateo County. She worked for a succession of leading local firms, including Fox & Carskadon, Grubb & Ellis, Coldwell Banker and Cashin Company, where she worked until her death. Her last transaction went to contract the day she died.

When not practicing real estate, Betty enjoyed playing bridge and, more than anything else, spending time with her grandchildren. She will be missed not only by her family but by her many colleagues in real estate, her several bridge clubs and groups and the many loyal friends she made in over 40 years in San Mateo.

Betty's husband Royce preceded her in death in 1994. She is survived by her four sisters, Catherine MacCalman, Mary Smith, Jeannie Bieber and Janet Morris, all of Salt Lake City, as well as her loving son, Zach, and his wife Libby, both of Hillsborough, and their two children, George and Peyton, whom she adored.

A graveside ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m. on December 11, 2010, at St. John's Cemetery in San Mateo, followed at noon by a celebration of her life at the Burlingame Country Club in Hillsborough. In lieu of flowers, her family requests that donations be made in her honor to the Mills-Peninsula Hospital Foundation.

Arrangements by Crosby-N. Gray & Co., Burlingame.

I am very sorry for the loss of your loved one. It is very hard for us who are left behind. Our father in heaven took Betty to a better place. I am sorry I didnt get to meet you and your family. When I saw the obituary it touched my heart. My mother who also has gone to a better place was also named Elizabeth and the name is very special to me. May GOD bless all who Betty left behind. You will someday join hands with Betty again. Until then hold one another close.
