Born in Rochester, NY he grew up in Minneapolis. Gene served in the Navy during WWII. He earned a degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University where he was a member of Acacia Fraternity. He and his wife of 56 years, Betty, moved to California in 1969 where he worked for International Video designing television broadcast equipment. Later at Fotomat, he developed the system of converting film to tape. He then worked for Rank Video and designed a system for reproducing multiple video tapes from one master for which he holds several patents. Gene and Betty retired to Santa Rosa, Ca in 1992. Dear Betty:
Larry Martin forwarded me a note on Gene's passing.
Gene probably had more to do with my career from Fotomat going forward. I learned more from him about management and broadcasting than anybody else. He always had time to listen and suggest. If you failed he would say did you learn from it. It was ok to fail. I always considered Gene my mentor and was very proud that I worked with him for the seven years at Fotomat as well as staying in touch while at 3M, West Coast Video and Technicolor.
Gene was a class act and he will be missed. They just don't make men like that any more.
Warmest regards,
Dan Owen

I last met Gene in London last year. He was a very quiet man and an interesting character who obviousily had a full and enjoyable life. An interesting afternoon was spent swapping stories on our professional work as fellow engineers. Deepest sympathies to Betty and her family at this sad time.
