Dr. N.S. Sridharan 'Sri', 59

A Multi-talented visionary, father, brother, world traveler, friend and mentor passed from this world Aug. 3, 2006 from the sudden and devastating onset of malaria after a recent trip to Africa.Born in Madras, India, Sri shined as a brilliant student. In 1966 he built one of the first computers in India at IIT Madras. A scholarship to SUNY brought him to the US and he was later awarded a PhD in Artificial Intelligence. His list of academic achievements span research at Stanford, professorship at Rutgers, and at the Technische Universitát, Munich, Germany.Published widely, Sri was the editor for JACM and Artificial Intelligence journals, founded the Pitman/Morgan-Kaufmann series of monographs in Artificial Intelligence and the 1989 Program Chair for the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence.Sri left academia in 1984 and accepted leadership positions at BBN Labs (Cambridge, MA), FMC Corp. (Santa Clara, CA) and Intel (Chandler, AZ).At Intel he was the Chief Architect for Knowledge Management and initiated storytelling as a means to introduce balance between people and technologies, process and culture. At his "retirement party" he commented that the thing he is proudest of about his work at Intel was all the wonderful people he hired into Intel, oriented them, coached them and then had them migrate to various divisions. Now there are "Sri people" in just about every Intel division and location throughout the world. After retirement he constructed Trust Workshops offered executive coaching to young, struggling companies and entrepreneurs. He was involved in local organizations that promote entrepreneurs and served on the Board of Directors of AZSoft. And a loving and compassionate volunteer of Hospice of the Valley. His passions were photography, people, poetry, books, and world travel. He founded a private organization to advance world knowledge of trust.Sri loved to share, inquire and stimulate conversation, he traveled the globe and embraced everyone he met. He illuminated the lives of the people who knew and loved him and he will be missed and mourned throughout the world.Dr. N.S. Sridharan is survived by his loving daughter Radhika, brother Paddu, and sisters Mallika, Bharathi, Kalyani and Bhavani.A gathering to celebrate his life and love will follow within the next few weeks. Sri was a powerful, peaceful and wise man, unlike any person I have ever met. He was unique in the way he saw things and could think about what was possible in this world. I only met him in the last year or so and he touched my life in a profound way; very lightly and in a way that encouraged me, but with great effect.
I, like many people, was shocked to lose Sri from our daily lives. He made a difference and made life better. I hope we can honor, with great love and care, what Sri taught us. I will.
I offer my prayers, peace and condolences to Sri's family and friends. He lived his life well.

Sri is missed and will be remembered by many spheres of friends and acquintances. He called before leaving for Africa stating that when he returned he would take another volunteer assignment with a hospice patient. To his family, I send my sympathy and offer you comfort knowing that he shared his gifts of intellect and compassion; setting an example for those privileged to know him.

Dear Sri,

After meeting you for the first time in 2001, I know I am different. You touched my heart and changed the way I look at the world. We have met several times, worked on several things, some failed and some were successful. In our last meeting you said "it is not important whether what we plan is successful or not - what is important for us is to work together, we will find some thing to work together". I was waiting for the next opportunity to work with you. Now, what I heard is not something I can accept.

When I saw you I saw compassion, peace, desire to change the world, and the pleasure in making those attempts.

Sri, you have taught me how to celebrate life. You showed me how easy it is to love people.. every one who comes across. You showed how much fun it is doing what you believe (without giving up ever), and finally you left me with a thought on how simple it is to call it a day, pack your bags and move on. But, what is not clear to many people is how hard you worked in creating Sri-people so that they carry the work further.

Sri - I will miss you as my dear friend and my greatest mentor.

Enjoy the infinite peace as we will celebrate your life.

Sri was a "Great Soul" and has left his indelible soul print on all those that knew him. Never having the opportunity to meet him personally, I only had a chance to correspond him briefly through email about the stories he had learned about the Mahatma Ghandi. He was elated that I was sharing these stories with the First Univeralist Church of Dexter, Maine.

My heart goes out to Sri's family and many friends. I've been inspired by Sri mostly though our participation in the some internet discussion group for several years. I became involved with his Technology Initiatives for Peace (TIP) project and had the great fortune to meet him when he taught his course with that name at the American University in DC. Sri's intellectual and spiritual depth was complemented by his skilled storytelling and his great sense of humor.

"We believe we need to make it profitable to entrepreneurs to solve social problems. If it were profitable to rid the world of hunger, hunger would be a thing of the past in short order."

Sri Sridharan, co-founder, The Have Heart Program, India

An hour ago we heard by phone about Sri Sridharan's death August 3 in Phoenix. We are so sorry he has unexpectedly left us.

Colleague and friend of Umberto Eco (eminent philosopher on the theory and study of signs and symbols, known as semiotics), Sri Sridharan was a visionary, a mentor, and a disciple of Ghandi. The form of malaria that took Sri from us is physically violent in its hopelessly destructive death-dealing dimensions. He was 59. We are so sad that we will no longer be with him physically.

We know that friends must be in terrible sorrow. Our thoughts as well go out to them. When someone close to us dies, something in us dies too. Then we spend time grieving for the something that died in us. For humans still on earth, that's what the physical death of someone close may feel and look like. On this end, we ourselves will grieve the loss of hope that we will ever again on this planet be in the same physical space with such a Star of God's Wonder as Sri Sridharan.

In deepest sympathy,

Yes he was a good man my classmate in IIT Madras . He was a topper in every subject. He contacted me in Hyderabad for his vision of buiding an equipment givng autoread out of heart rate, BP , pulse rate etc by paying just paying a small amount for the poor in India. He was still in the process and then his untimely death leaves a big vaccum in his search and vision for such equipment for his country India. May God bless his soul and his daughter Radhika and brother Paddu and his family. He was a big man in every way.His last talk with me still ring in my ears about his big vision for India-infact he wanted to mneet President Kalam for this job. . Well not to be !! God bless his kindly soul .

With saddened hearts me and my Ramani feel his great loss and our hearts go out to his brother Paddy.

It was a privilege to know and work with Sri and share his friendship. I worked with him at the FMC Artificial Intelligence lab, and also on the IJCAI board. His warm friendship and good humor and support made a welcome part of work for me and our colleagues. He made our workplace and world a better place for us.

Sri was my uncle ... I along with some of his other nephews and nieces have not seen him in some years. Those years, however, have not dulled the memory his intellect, wit or charm and they certainly have not dulled the sting of this loss. We morn deeply and send heartfelt sympathies to his family and particularly to his beautiful daughter, my cousin Radhi.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

Though I did not come to know Sri as well as I would have liked, I do know that he is the type of person that each of us should strive to be. His love and compassion will live on through his contributions to the world and through his greatest creation: Radhika. Ryan and I send our deepest condolences to friends and family for the sudden loss of someone so special.

It is difficult coming to grips with Sri's passing from this world. Knowing Sri found the person he was searching for inside himself in Africa brings relief. My condolences to all his family and friends. Sri was a mountain of a man.

To know Sri bhai is to know compassion. I came in close contact with him when I was working on a film about dwarkoji. It's still hard to believe he is no longer with us physically . I send love, and prayers for his family and friends, knowing his light will forever shine.

My deepest sympathy to Sri's family and friends who are all grieving his loss today. Sri and I hve been colleagues since 1994, first in Knowledge Management working on the Millenium Project with Intel and Siemens and then carving out and applying the trust model. He was a dear friend who taught me much about compassion, about myself and I will miss him dearly.

Family and Friends of Sri,

What a gift Sri has been to me over and over again, as I know he has been to all of you, his dear friends and family. I will never forget Sri and his "kindly, kindlier, kindliest" philosophy and the deep way he lived this in his own life. I will sorely miss Sri. I have been blessed by his friendship. May his soul be at peace and may we all continue to be filled with his presence.

The Sri that I knew was a beautiful man that lived from a spacious and peaceful heart. I will miss his wise insights, generous nature and gift for connecting the right people at the right time. He was an inspiration for the much needed work of trust and world peace.

Many, many blessings and love during this difficult time to all his family and friends.

To Sri's relatives, both those I have met and those I haven't, my condolences. Your brother, father changed my life; he was a brilliant and wonderful man, and I am so happy I got to visit India with him -- not once, but twice, and to be with him as he reached out to people to continue the work of Ghandi and Dwarko Sundrani. I cannot believe he is gone from the physical world; I know he is out there somewhere continuing his work.

I always wanted to write down every word Sri spoke; he was full of wisdom and profound thought. He taught me a lot about myself in the too-few times I was with him. I miss him already!
