Paul Ernst Obituary

Paul Kenneth Ernst

Resident of Santa Clara

Passed away November 24, 2010 following a heroic seven and a half year battle with bile duct cancer. He was 55 years old. Though his illness demanded much of his time and energy, it did not define him. Paul was a vibrant and courageous man who was deeply committed to his family and his work.

Paul was born on May 17, 1955 in St. Louis, Missouri to Louis and Lucille Ernst. He was the youngest of six children and was raised among a large and loving extended family. Paul discovered baseball as a young child. His devotion to the sport, and most particularly, to the St. Louis Cardinals, endured throughout his lifetime. Paul attended St. Catherine's Grade School, conveniently located across the street from the family home. He graduated from Rosary High School in 1973. He then attended the University of Missouri-St. Louis for his undergraduate work, followed by St. Louis University, where he earned his MA in Religious Studies.

In 1980, Paul moved to Santa Clara, California, to marry the love of his life, Gerri Menzies. Together they raised two daughters, Katie Ernst Oncay and Sarah Ernst. Paul worked as the Youth Minister for St. Justin Parish from 1980-1992. He went on to earn an MS in Psychology from the University of California-East Bay. As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, he first spent six years in geriatric counseling. From the late nineties until his death, Paul worked as a clinical counselor with Santa Clara County, Drug and Alcohol Services, supporting those who struggle with addiction. Paul found purpose in serving others and practicing compassion. Throughout his journey, Paul remained dedicated to collecting life's lessons and using them well.

Funeral services will be held at St. Justin Church, 2655 Homestead Rd., Santa Clara, CA on December 11, 2010 beginning at noon. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to ChildFund International, at Childfund.org.

Heaartfelt condolences to Gerri and daughters. Paul is a very special soul, and someone who's memory I will always treasure. I could always sense such a kindness and gentleness within him, and will miss him very much. He inspired me on the spiritual path, as he was always so devoted to God and Guru, and one could feel his closeness with the Divine, and see the many blessings that surrounded him on his journey. In God, Christ and the Guru's love, Olivia Howard
