Rosemary Statt Obituary

Sr. Rosemary Statt Youngest daughter of the late Raymond W. and Elizabeth Gleason Statt, died at Oakwood, Retirement Center of the Religious of the Sacred Heart, Atherton, CA, on October 31, 2009. She is survived by three sisters, Mary Elizabeth Romson, Nancy Heffernan, Ellen Miller, and a brother, Rev. Thomas R. Statt, all of the Rochester and Syracuse area in New York. Sr. Rosemary and her sisters graduated from the convent of the Sacred Heart, Prince Street, Rochester. She received her B.A. from Manhattanville College in 1962. While doing course work at New York Theological Union, she taught students from Harlem. She made her profession of final vows in the Society of the Sacred Heart at Greenwich, CT, in 1969. In the early 70's, Sr. Rosemary obtained a masters degree in education at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and soon began work as religion teacher in Uganda, East Africa, until the political situation there forced her return to the States. After three years of teaching in Hells Kitchen on Manhattan's West side, she rejoined the Kenya/Uganda province of the society for ten years. Returning to the States in 1989, she began a career as a social worker with Catholic Charities in San Jose, CA, where she received a ten year citation. Wherever she went, Sr. Rosemary bought fun and a great sense of humor. Her courageous spirit went with her, when in 2009, illness required that she move to the society's retirement center in Atherton, CA. The funeral mass will be celebrated by Sr. Rosemary's brother, Rev. Thomas Statt, at 10 A.M. on Saturday, November 7, at Oakwood, 140 Valparaiso Avenue, Atherton, CA. Interment will be at Kenwood, Albany, NY. The family requests that memorial donations be sent to the retirement fund of the society of the Sacred Heart, Oakwood.

So many of Rosie's co-workers, past and present, have her example of passion for justice, communion with the poor and marginalized, and a deep sense of humor and perspective, as a memory. Thanks to Rosie's community and family for sharing Rosie with those of us who had the privilege of knowing her.

My sympathy to the enitre Statt family. Rosie was one of a kind. She was a great lady her stories would have us all laughing for hours. She will be deeply missed by all of us here at Depot Commons.

Behind all of Rosie's laughter and humor was a deep compassion for those in need. She would go to any extreme to provide assistance where it was most needed. Being part of the "YaYa Sisterhood" with Rosie has brought many laughs and treasured memories.

May you rest in peace, Rosie. Heaven will never be the same with you there!

Rosie's sensitivity to the poor as well as to everyone that she came in contact with is such an example to us all. She always had a joke to cheer you, but could share deeply on spiritual concerns as well. Her fighting spirit is certainly an inspiration to all.

What a loss for all of us who knew Rosie! Her humor was beyond description, but more importantly her concern for anyone she came in contact with is legend. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. It was a gift to be her friend.

I know the entire Sheehan family joins me in expressing our sadness at the loss of your wonderful sister. She will and has always been "Toots" to us and it was only my noticing that she went to join such a great club on the eve of All Saints Day that I realized it had been 56 years since the Sheehan that loved her most of all had died as well. Your parents brought up such wonderful giving children and Rosemary was an icon for all she came in contact with as to how to live a giving, caring life. What a welcome those "flights of angels" that led her on her way last weekend must have had. Terry has been waiting for his good friend for a long time (to us), I'm sure he was waiting with your parents to welcome her home. Much love to you all, Kathy Sheehan Corletta

Rosemary brought so much joy to all those with whom she came in contact, but most of all joy to her family. Her work in Africa as well as California will continue for many years. Her compassion and wit can never be forgotten. May she rest in Peace.
