Robert Johnson Obituary

Robert Edmund Johnson Jr., 62, of Framingham, died Thursday, May 29, 2014 at the Framingham Union Hospital. Born in Framingham, he was the son of the late Dr. Robert E. and Dr. Lorna (Drummond) Johnson. At the age of 2, Bob was stricken with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, which left him physically disabled, but could not disable his wonderful spirit or courage. Bob was a graduate of Framingham South High School class of 1969 and Brandeis University, class of 1973, majoring in Greek and Latin . He received his MBA from Boston University. His first venture in business occurred in elementary school when he operated Bobs Candy Inc. This set the stage for his future successful endeavors as a businessman. Having difficulty obtaining a job because of his disability, he established Johnsons Auto Literature, Inc., which grew to 10 employees. Buying and selling antique automobile literature at flea markets, in Hemmings Motor News and on the Internet, he developed a worldwide clientele, including Jay Leno, among others. His booths at Carlisle and Hershey Automotive Swap Meets were well attended and quite profitable. A lover of antiquity, he enjoyed collecting early American antiques and prints, as well as rebuilding antique cars and trucks. Most of all, Bob was known for his acerbic wit and tender heart. He also had a soft spot for cats, particularly tuxedo cats. Bob is survived by his sister, Amy Johnson, MD of Rochester; nieces, Devon Drummond Johnson of Rochester and Sarah Lyons Duncan, as well as her husband Mark and their daughter, Grace Laurel Duncan, of North Andover; nephew Christopher Samuel Lyons of Portsmouth, NH, and cousins Chrissy and Torry of Nashville, TN, as well as many beloved friends and, of course, his cherished cat, Smudgie. He was the brother of the late Laurel Muffin Lyons, MD and James Samuel Johnson. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at 11 AM in the Edgell Memorial Chapel at Edgell Grove Cemetery, 53 Grove St. Framingham followed by his burial. At the familys request, there will be no visiting hours. Arrangements are under the direction of Norton Funeral Home, 53 Beech St., Framingham. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Bobs memory may be made to Tufts Animal Hospital, 200 Westboro Road, North Grafton, MA 01536. I miss his warm smile and his knowledge about Oldsmobile and Pontiac manuals !

I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Bob Johnson the other day...I have known Bob shice my first literature aquisition back in 1990 when Bob sold me a1955 Mercedes Benz 300SL Gullwing brochure "nice piece" he said.
Though I had many rewarding successive purcheses over the ensuing 24 years , the better part of the experience was my getting to know Bob and my admiration for him only deepened over time. I have many fond memories of extended conversations covering a broad range of topics from architecture (my field) to zeeplins- he was a true renaissance man when it came to knowledge. I feel blessed to have nown him and my life is richer for it.

Following Bob's suggestion we established a business relationship over 20 years ago. I am glad I had the chance to meet him in 2008. I am very sad to hear about him passing away.

So sad to hear that Bobby died. Joan and I have lost contact with him over the years but think fondly back to those years at Framingham South HS, recalling Bobby's inexhaustible good spirit, dry wit and loyalty. He will live on in our memories.

Very sorry to hear this news. I was a classmate of Bob's at Jonathan Maynard Elementary School and always remember his great sense of humor and was amazed at how bright he was. He never appeared to be limited in spite of his physical issues and never complained about them.

Your family will be in my prayers.

Amy, I am so sorry for your loss. Bobby was a wonderful person whose friendship over the years I valued so much. I will remember him fondly. My thoughts are with you and your family.

Bobby wrote in my high school yearbook, "Donna, I consider myself privileged to have known you." But, really, the privilege has been mine! In 2010, Bobby came to California for the Coucours d'Elegance, and we had the privilege of spending time with him at his booth, and being treated to passes to the car show.

He has always been there for me, including multiple trips to the Logan Express.

I miss him greatly.

I was heartbroken to hear about Bobby. When I worked for his dad for all those years, Bobby and I had a great relationship. Never once did he ever say I cannot do this or that but just did it.... What a zest for life he had.I will miss his smiling face and wish his family peace in knowing he has gone home to heaven.

So sad to hear this news. Agree w my dad that Bobby was a treasure. I loved getting his advice, hearing his stories and quips and bon mots. He was - and will always be - family. Lots of love to Amy and all the Johnsons.

It is with such a heavy heart that I say goodbye to any member of your family, and of course that goes double for Bobby. He was such an amazing person- always with a great story, a funny twist, and a glimmer in his eye. He was such a great guest at any party- whether it was a not-to-be-missed Christmas Eve in Framingham or Easter at my parents. And during sad times, he always knew what to say. I am at a loss today, and we all are, but I'm so very happy to have known him and to have shared as much as I did with him. RIP Bobby, I'll miss you!

A role model
Born to be rich
Opted to live a life of work
Born to grow handicapped
Choosed to do a lot more than those with health
Born to suffer losses
Endured to the last his own
Gave all of us an example to remember.
