John Hampton Obituary

HAMPTON, JOHN John Wade Hampton, age 49, of Middletown, CT, formerly of Old Lyme, CT, Middlebury, VT, and Merrick, NY, died Thursday, December 19, 2013, at his home in Middletown. John was born in Freeport, NY, on April 5, 1964. He was the son of Mason L. Hampton, Jr. and Carolyn Jean Hampton. He was raised in Merrick, New York, and fell in love with photography at a young age. He won numerous awards for his photography including a full-tuition scholarship to the School of Visual Arts in New York City, which he attended. John is survived by his mother, Jean Hampton, his sisters, Kathy Hauswirth and Linda Smith, his brothers-in-law, Tom Hauswirth and Randy Smith, his nephews, Gavin Hauswirth; Jonathan, Wade, and Will Smith; and his aunt, Norma Todd. He was predeceased by his father Mason Hampton. John’s loving and adventurous heart, his laughter and provocative sense of humor, his incisive and studious mind, his empathy and concern for social justice will all be remembered with great joy. There will be a private family service. An upcoming retrospective exhibition of his photos will be announced.

John was my brother's best friend and like a member of my family for so many years. His artistic and intellectual gifts were only matched by his enormous sense of humor. I will never forget his contagious laughter and mischievous acts. God be with John and his family.
